The Real World: Sydney is the nineteenth season of MTV's popular reality television series The Real World, which focuses on seven diverse strangers living together for several months in a different city each season, as cameras follow their lives and interpersonal relationships.

Production lasted from February to May 26, 2007, though the duration of the cast's stay in the house was four months. The season was set in a contemporary 20,000-square-foot, waterfront house at 19 Darling Walk in Darling Harbour. The season premiered on August 8, 2007.

Assignment

Every season of The Real World, beginning with its fifth season, has included the assignment of a season-long group job or task to the housemates. This season, the cast is working for Contiki Tours, creating a Sydney tour package.

Cast

Cast members were first photographed and identified by the media while participating in a Contiki tour at the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park.

On August 1, 2007, the New York Daily News reported that according to MTV, Persian cast member Parisa Montazaran is the show's first Muslim. Mohammed Bilal, of the 1994 San Francisco season, however, is a Muslim.

Cast Member Age1 Hometown Biography RW/RR Challenges
Cohutta 23 Blue Ridge, Georgia As shown in the premiere episode, Cohutta builds log homes for a living. He has done very little traveling away from home, and characterizes his home town and family as being "slower", because they take the time to sit down to eat together and enjoy the moment. Consequently, he feels out of place whenever he visits a city.

Dunbar 22 Natchez, Mississippi Dunbar's family lost everything after a money-laundering scandal, and Dunbar was forced to negotiate his own financial situation, and take responsibility for his life. He enrolled in the military in order to pay for his education at the University of Mississippi, where he belonged to a fraternity. He is committed to his girlfriend back home. MTV.com describes him as "well-spoken, opinionated on political issues, literature and poetry, arrogant, and hot-headed." In the premiere, he claims to be more proud of being Southern than of being an American.

Isaac 21 Cleveland, Ohio Isaac is from Cleveland, Ohio and a business major at [[Arizona State University]. As he explains in the season premiere, he is an artist and a musician with a history of juvenile deliquency, having been put on probation for robbing 15 houses and shooting off fireworks through someone's window. Given the choice between nine months and jail and a "treatment center", he chose the latter, in order to reevaluate his direction in life.

Kelly Anne 20 Georgetown, Texas Kelly Anne, as she explains in the season premiere, grew up very poor, particularly compared to those she grew up with, and as a result, did not feel she fit in. She claims that if she feels someone is walking all over her, she fights back fiercely. For her entry video, she stripped down to her undershirt and panties, on which she had written, "Make it Hott: Pick Me!", explaining that she likes the attention, and is not used to other girls getting more attention than her. She is of mixed heritage that includes Italian and Irish.

Parisa 21 New York City, New York The daughter of Iranian immigrants, and an aspiring singer, Montazaran told the Daily News that the experience of living with cameras was an "exaggerated existence", which amounted to "partying seven days a week", but that she did nothing during her stay that would embarrass her or her family, though she did call home one night when she drank too much. Parisa says in the premiere that she recently graduated college early in order to concentrate on her music.

Shauvon 24 Sacramento, California Shauvon is a 24-year-old journalism major at the California State University Sacramento, and as she says in the premiere, wants to be a news reporter. She has her own dating and relationships column called "Sexcapades". She insists that she is not the blonde bimbo that people may think she looks like. She recently ended a long-term relationship with a man who told her she had to choose between a career and marriage and children.

Trisha 19 Fresno, California In the premiere, Trisha says that she and her friends are the stereotypical "hot girl" clique. Her parents gave her a promise ring when she was twelve, as a symbol that she would retain her virginity until marriage, but as her boyfriend Jarod states in her home video, they have not upheld that resolution.

Episodes

Episode 1. "G'Day, Australia!"
The housemates meet for the first time. Trisha is a 19-year-old blonde from California. Cohutta is a 23-year-old man from a small town in Georgia. Trisha is from a big city, but Cohutta is awed by Sydney. Kelly Anne is a 20-year-old from Texas. Isaac, a 21-year-old artist and musician, waits at a park bench, where he meets Shauvon, a 24-year-old blonde from California, whose buxom figure he instantly finds attractive. Dunbar, who hails from Mississippi, is fiercely loyal to the south. He meets Parisa, a 21-year-old New York student who is attracted to him, but she is disappointed when she sees how devoted he is to his girlfriend.

Trisha is apprehensive about her housemates when she arrives at the house, but becomes friends with Kelly Anne, who becomes her roommate. Trisha expresses doubt that she will be able to remain faithful to her boyfriend. Kelly Anne hopes to use her time in the house to show off her flirtatious side. Shauvon immediately expresses fears about being left out of Trisha and Kelly Anne's clique, but is relieved to meet Parisa, whom she deems "normal". Parisa is intimidated by the other girls' looks, seeing them as "carbon copy supermodel-types", and after Parisa gives a cursory greeting to Kelly Anne and Trisha, who have already settled into their room, before walking off to explore the house, Kelly Anne and Trisha, who have already explored the house, criticize Parisa for this, with Kelly Anne saying that Parisa will have four months to explore the house. Meanwhile, the three men discuss who they think the most attractive of the women is, and are unanimous that it's Kelly Anne. Dunbar also opines that Parisa is the "deepest" and least shallow of the four women.

The housemates go out on their first night to a club, where Isaac and Shauvon flirt playfully, while Kelly Anne gets drunk and collapses giggling. Parisa worries that her housemates' behavior will force her to become the babysitter. Annoyed and not having a good time, she leaves the club before the others.

Back at the house, Kelly Anne and Dunbar use the hot tub, and Kelly Anne flirts overtly with Dunbar. Dunbar admits that despite his loyalty to his girlfriend Julie, his loyalty is tested by Kelly Anne's overtures. Parisa observes this, and she and Shauvon discuss how they are both disgusted by Kelly Anne's behavior.

Episode 2. "Hittin' The Hot Tub"
In the morning, following Kelly Anne's romantic interlude with Dunbar in the hot tub the previous night, Parisa and Shauvon are in the bathroom criticizing Kelly Anne, and overhearing this, Kelly Anne confronts them. She subsequently vents to Trisha, opining that they're jealous because she's cute and has Dunbar's attention. Later that morning, the housemates prepare to go to the beach, but Trisha and Parisa get into an argument over Trisha cleaning the mess that Parisa left in the kitchen. At the beach, Shauvon takes her top off, but covers her breasts with her hands to discourage ogling by her male housemates, though Isaac kisses her at one point. Later at the house, Trisha relates an incident at McDonald's in which she tried to order an item, and told the Asian store employee, who did not understand the word "sample", to "Keep the money, maybe take some English lessons, I'm leaving, because you don't know how to speak English, so it doesn't really work out." This comment, which was reported in an August 16, 2007 edition of The Daily Telegraph, offends Parisa, which she sees as "inconsiderate" and "mean". This reminds her of the anti-immigrant attitude of her teachers, who she says belittled her mother for having an accent. That evening, Kelly Anne and Trisha speak to Dunbar to win his sympathy in their conflict with Parisa and Shauvon, but he remains neutral. Meanwhile, Shauvon and Isaac share a flirtatious confessional session. Shauvon and Kelly Anne discuss their conflict and make amends, and Kelly Anne then confronts Parisa to do the same with her, and is successful.

Episode 3. "Suddenly Single"
Trisha has an argument with Jarod, her boyfriend, over the phone, and feeling that she should not have a boyfriend holding her back during a time when she should be enjoying herself, she tells him she wants to "take a break". The next day she invites over to the house a man named Alex that she met at a club. Cohutta and Isaac disapprove. Shauvon wants to take advantage of the local men, but is nervous, so Trisha coaches her and helps her set up a date. The housemates have a dinner together, during which Alex and Trisha flirt. Parisa gets drunk on two glasses of wine, and Dunbar carries her home. Trisha expresses her dislike of Parisa to Shauvon, but Shauvon defends Parisa, who is her roommate. As Shauvon becomes intimate in her bedroom with a local boy named Ky, Isaac, speaking to Cohutta, laments that he had a dalliance with someone sleeping in the next room. After Ky leaves, Shauvon regrets that she went so far on their first date. Trisha discusses her love life with Cohutta, and decides to slow down in order to decide what she wants right now. Trisha then emails Jarod to confess what happened, and while waiting for his response, Parisa complains about Trisha monopolizing the computer. The two then exchange vitriolic insults. Parisa later tells Shauvon and Kelly Anne that Trisha is "self-centered" and "toxic", and that she doesn't want to have anything to do with her. Meanwhile Trisha vents to Isaac and Cohutta, but they criticize her for insulting "hitting below the belt". Isaac says he definitely does not hate Trisha, but when Trisha asks Isaac if he likes her as a person, he responds, "I don't know yet."

Episode 4. "They"ve Got Chemistry"
Parisa and Dunbar flirt. Parisa, having previously seen Dunbar only for his good looks, says she wants to get to know him better, but Kelly Anne expresses disapproval, since he has a girlfriend back home. During an outing, Shauvon observes that Dunbar and Parisa have chemistry, and that Dunbar is provoking Parisa in order to test her because he knows she likes him, but predicts Parisa will not pursue a relationship with Dunbar because he has a girlfriend. In the confessional, Dunbar tells Kelly Anne that contrary to the perception that he"s been flirting with her, any attraction he has towards Parisa is lessened by her being "uptight", "neurotic", and "high-strung", and that because she provokes him this way, he is trying to make it known to her that he doesn"t like her that much. Parisa, for her part, observes that Kelly Anne is overly sexual in the way she flirts and horses around with Dunbar. The group decide to out that evening to a bar/hotel and as they get into the car, Dunar and Parisa exchange more unkind words. At the bar, Isaac meets up with Noirin, the Irish girl he met earlier in the day, and after sharing a romantic evening at the bar, go back to the house, where they share the hot tub before retiring to Isaac"s bed. The next day, Parisa observes to Dunbar that she is the only one on whom he takes out his anger, and says it"s "getting" old for her. Parisa decides to vent her frustrations by writing a letter to Dunbar. Dunbar relates some of the letter"s contents, in which, according to him, Parisa stated that she had a crush on him, and didn"t appreciate Kelly Anne"s behavior around him, but that Parisa herself fantasized about taking a shower with him, which Dunbar sees an inexplicable contradiction.

Episode 5. "Mini Crush"
KellyAnne states that she feels comfortable around any guy who is not "scummy", and that she and Dunbar are just good friends. Parisa opines that Dunbar claims to be an heartfelt, gentleman, but acts like an oversexed teenager around Kelly Anne, and is not acknowledging the letter she wrote him in the previous episode. Dunbar tells Parisa that she is very attractive and interesting, but Shauvon sees the term "interesting" as a "stab to the heart". Dunbar says that until Parisa shows that she"s capable of the relationship he"d like to have with her, he will not respond to her letter. Dunbar tells Kelly Anne that it"s not his fault if of the two women in the house who have a crush on him, one is a fun girl to hang around with, and another wants to marry him and be his soul mate. He also expresses incredulity in the confessional that Parisa doesn"t understand that he"s not interested in her. Kelly Anne says she has no feelings for Dunbar, and is annoyed to discover that Dunbar thinks she"s interested in him. She regrets having flirted with him, and seeing now that she has stepped into a love triangle, resolves to lessen her flirtatious behavior with him. Parisa and Kelly Anne talk to each other about Dunbar, whom they both now say they do not like. Kelly Anne, that evening, tells this to Dunbar, and when he points out that she once indicated feelings for him, she says that she did not mean it in the way he apparently understood it. As Parisa, Isaac and Cohutta use the studio to make some music, Dunbar criticizes Parisa"s singing as unoriginal, and when he later tells her that women should not sing the blues, and tells her not to walk away from him as if he is holding her back, she tells him she doesn"t have to stand around to absorb him abuse. When he indicates that he was merely expressing his sincere opinion, she tells him she won"t be there while he does so. Kelly Anne and Cohutta begin flirting. When Dunbar walks in on the two of them in bed, he calls her "a hardcore cock-tease."
