Survivor: All Stars

Survivor: All Stars (Courtesy Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Survivor: All-Stars is the eighth installment of the popular television reality show Survivor. It was taped in 2003 and debuted in the United States on CBS on February 1, 2004 after Super Bowl XXXVIII. It was set on the Pearl Islands of Panama, where the previous Survivor: Pearl Islands had just finished. The winner of this series was Amber Brkich, whose 4-3 victory over Rob Mariano was announced on live television on May 9, 2004. At the end of the series a twist called America's Tribal Council was broadcast live on May 13 2004. It involved the public voting for who they wanted to win a second million dollar prize. When the show was broadcast Rupert Boneham won the million dollars.

This season of the series featured the return of eighteen players from previous seasons, divided into three teams: Chapera, Mogo Mogo, and Saboga. The three tribes each are named after various islands of the Pearl Islands. During the fifth episode, the Saboga tribe was dissolved and its members divided between the other two tribes. In the ninth episode, the ten remaining contestants randomly chose new tribal memberships; improbably, every contestant but Brkich swapped teams. One episode later, the two teams merged into a tribe called Chaboga Mogo, named by the Survivors for a combination of all three tribes (CHApera, SaBOGA, MOGO Mogo).

This season was released on DVD on September 14, 2004.

The tribe colors used were:

  • Chapera - Red
  • Mogo Mogo - Green
  • Saboga - Yellow
  • Chaboga Mogo - Blue
For the second and third times ever in Survivor, two contestants voluntarily quit the game for personal reasons rather than being voted off. Jenna Morasca left during episode three over mounting concern for her mother's health. Her mother ultimately succumbed to cancer eight days after Jenna's resignation. Sue Hawk left distraught in episode six, one day after an incident during an immunity challenge in which a naked Richard Hatch had brief but inappropriate bodily contact with her.

One unexpected aspect of this series was the transformation of the relationship between Amber Brkich and Rob Mariano from an alliance within the game to a romantic relationship. This climaxed during the live finale when just before the reading of the final votes, Mariano proposed marriage and Brkich accepted.

A second surprise at the reunion show was the announcement that a second million dollar prize would be awarded to the All-Star player who received the most votes from viewers who could call in or vote online. The winner, announced on May 13, was Rupert Boneham. Boneham won an overwhelming victory over the other seventeen players, receiving 85% of the 38 million votes cast (Tom Buchanan, Colby Donaldson and Rob Mariano also finished in the top four).

: Saboga chose to give some taste of reward to the other two tribes. They gave a flint and pot to all the tribes.
: Since Jenna M left the game, no immunity challenge and no tribal council were shown during the episode.
: Saboga, having lost the reward challenge, was dissolved with two members sent to each of the Chapera and Mogo Mogo tribes.
: Despite Sue's resignation from the game, a reward challenge was still held.
: The challenge was combined Reward and Immunity. Chapera was able to chose one Mogo Mogo member for their reward. They selected Kathy, who was not permitted to go to tribal council with her tribe.
: A tribe reshuffling took place instead of a reward challenge. Improbably, Amber was the only one not to change tribes.
: Black is used to indicate that the reward challenge is indivdual and not tribal. No merge color was given out at this point in the episode.
: Two were given immunity at the night's tribal council.
: Rob M forgoed seeing his video from home. He gave everybody rain ponchos and letters from home.

Elimination Notes

  • Tina Wesson - As a previous winner of the game, Tina was an immediate threat. Jenna L. urged the non-winners in her group (Rupert, Jerri, Rudy, and herself) to eliminate the winners first. Between Tina and Ethan, Ethan was seen as more of a tribal challenge benefit. Despite the former winners attempting to make a pact with Rupert and Rudy, Tina was the first to go. (4-2)
  • Rudy Boesch - Rudy injured his foot in a challenge and was therefore seen as a detriment by his tribe. Even though Ethan was supposed to go, Jenna L. and Jerri changed their plans to keep Ethan for physical strength. (3-2)
  • Jenna Morasca - Jenna left the game on Day 9, citing her reasoning as having felt "a vibe" that her mother (who had long been battling cancer) needed her. According to the end of the episode, her mother died eight days later, soon after Jenna arrived home.
  • Rob Cesternino - Rob was voted off for a variety of reasons. Dubbed by Jeff Probst as "the smartest player to never win the game," Rob's sneaky strategy in the Amazon made the All-Stars perceive him as a threat. While discussing the vote, Amber explained to Tom that Rob was "too smart." His Chaperan tribemates also found him too foolhardy and his work ethic was questioned as he always seemed to take the easy way out. Boston Rob also didn't like that Rob C. took the stance that he was the best Rob to play the game. With overwhelming odds against him, eventually his number was up. (5-1)
  • Richard Hatch - Though the original decision was to eliminate Ethan, Colby had a change of mind and decided it was Richard's time to go. Colby found Richard as someone that he couldn't trust and was the "cancer" hurting Mogo Mogo. Richard was the original Survivor, and he always claimed that he was the best player ever to play the game. Despite Jerri's rallying for Colby's overthrow, as well as Richard's, Richard was "bamboozled!". (6-1)
  • Susan Hawk - Quit the game on day 16 because she felt she had been sexually violated by Richard in the previous immunity challenge.
  • Colby Donaldson - Colby and Ethan believed they were running the show and their plan was to eliminate Jerri. Lex, figuring that Colby was a threat coming into the merge (he won 5 immunity challenges in a row in the Outback), decided to convince Shii-Ann and Jerri to vote him out. (3-2)
  • Ethan Zohn - His winner status ultimately caught up to him. Lex did not feel comfortable keeping Ethan in his game plan for being a physical threat. (4-1)
  • Jerri Manthey - The tribes switched and all 4 members of Mogo Mogo headed to Chapera camp with Amber. The new Chapera tribe chose to send Jerri packing after Boston Rob asked Lex for a favor to save Amber after the immunity challenge. Lex and Kathy, feeling Rob's favor would be beneficial, switched the vote. Jerri, despite making pleas to Lex, was voted off. (4-1)
  • Lex van den Berghe - Although Lex saved Rob's girlfriend during the previous tribal council, and Amber made promises to Lex and Kathy to keep them to the Final 4, Rob and Amber broke their agreements and chose to stick with the original Chapera tribe. An angry Lex was voted out of the tribe and became the 1st member of the jury. (7-2)
  • Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien - Kathy was a part of the original Mogo Mogo tribe and was more of a threat than Shii Ann. Despite her attempts to sway Tom, Alicia, and Rupert away from the power trio of Boston Rob, Amber and Jenna L., she was voted off and became the 2nd member of the jury. (6-2)
  • Alicia Calaway - After Shii Ann, the last remaining Mogo Mogo member, won immunity, the Chaperans had to turn on one of their own. Alicia did not fit into any of the alliances, was a physical threat, and had an abrasive personality that irritated others. She was voted out and became the 3rd jury member. (6-1)
  • Shii Ann Huang - She was the last remaining Mogo Mogo member and despite a valiant effort, could not win immunity again. The Chapera alliance finished the "pagonging" of the Mogo Mogo tribe and Shii Ann became the 4th member of the jury. (5-1)
  • Tom Buchanan - Despite having an alliance with Rob and Amber, they chose to give their loyalty to Jenna and Rupert instead. In addition, there was speculation about if Lex and Tom made an alliance before the game as well as Tom considering to betray Rob. Being seen as two-faced, Tom was unanimously voted off and the 5th member of the jury. (4-1)
  • Rupert Boneham - Rupert was voted out when Boston Rob and Amber convinced his ally Jenna chose to vote for him instead of risking drawing a purple rock (which would not have been the tie breaker in this case; here the tie breaker would have been a fire-starting challenge. However, producers did not tell the contestants beforehand what the tie breaker would be until the next season, Survivor: Vanuatu. The castaways thought the purple rock would be used because it was used the last time there was a tie in Survivor Marquesas, even though Probst had admitted it was a mistake to use it previously with the final four). He was voted off and was the 6th jury member. (3-1).
  • Jenna Lewis - Jenna's foot slipped during the final immunity challenge. Rob won immunity and chose to take Amber, to the Final Two. She was the 7th and Final member of the jury (1-0).
  • Rob Mariano - The jury saw him as a diabolical backstabber who chose winning over friendship. The votes casts were mainly of personal reasons and not strategical. Gained the votes of Kathy, Rupert, and Jenna, but Rob lost by only one vote.
  • Amber Brkich - Seen as the lesser of two evils by the jury, and votes were casts were more against Boston Rob instead of for Amber (except for Shii Ann, who said she would have voted for Rob if he brought Jenna). Won in a close 4-3 decision with the votes of Lex, Alicia, Shii Ann, and Tom.

Jenna M. left the game on day 9 to return home to her dying mother.
Sue quit the game on day 17 after being outraged about the incident with Richard at the previous challenge.
Kathy abstained from the vote, as she was chosen to enjoy the reward with the Chapera tribe.

Other notes

  • Jenna L and Rupert are the only contestants ever to have worn four buffs over the run of a single season: their original yellow, the red that came from being absorbed into another tribe, the green that came from the switch, and finally the blue from the merge.
  • Tom was eliminated at the 36-day mark, giving him a total of 73 days experience as a contestant. This record still stands.
  • Chaboga Mogo is, of course, a combination of all three original tribe names, just as Chuay Jai was for Thailand, Xhakum would be for Guatemala, and Aitutonga would be for Cook Islands.
  • Rob proposed to Amber before the votes were read during the finale. Amber said yes. About a year later, Rob and Amber competed in The Amazing Race 7, where they finished in second place, behind Uchenna and Joyce. They along with Uchenna & Joyce would race again in The Amazing Race All-Stars, where they were the fourth eliminated team after three straight wins.
  • In Episode 9 during an ostensibly random tribe swap, Amber was the only contestant to remain on her original tribe, every other contestant switched to the opposite tribe.
  • At the end of the series Amber was presented with a chance to give another contestant a car. She chose Shii-Ann, the contestant whom she believed had been the swing vote.
  • Jeff Probst actually revealed the winner weeks before the final episode in an interview with Mancow. Mancow had read an ordered list of contestants that would be voted off, with Rob and Amber at the end of the list. Jeff added that "Amber wins by a 4-3 vote" which turned out to be true (the list that Mancow read was not exactly true, but near 80% correct). Whether Probst knowingly revealed the outcome or was just playing into the show is unknown.
  • This was the first and only time in Survivor history where the contracts signed were not followed. While it was stated no two people could conspire to share the money at the end of the game, runner up Rob Mariano stated in an episode that "Best case scenario I'm [Rob] spending my own money, worst case scenario I'm spending Amber's." This caused viewers to believe that the two had entered a pact to share the money. At the reunion, Rob proposed to Amber and she accepted, they later wed in a television special. To this date fans of the show still debate if this was a violation of the contract, but nothing has ever been done.
  • Producer Mark Burnett has confirmed that two people turned down formal offers to appear on the All-Stars edition of Survivor"Elisabeth Filarski Hasselback from The Australian Outback, who had recently taken a job as a co-host of The View, and Colleen Haskell of the show's premiere season, who "had moved on with her life and just genuinely didn't want to go through that again." Burnett jokingly said that "the casting was really, really scientific. I got a yellow legal pad and wrote down 24 names, and [then] cut down to 18. It was that quick."
  • Survivor: Pearl Islands winner Sandra Diaz-Twine also confirmed that she turned down an offer to join the show, saying that she was still recovering from parasites that she received at Pearl Islands.
  • This is the first season in which the tribes merging and 1st jury member being revealed happened on one same episode.
  • Rob Mariano is the only "Survivor" contestant to appear in two "Survivor" installments, make the merge in both, and never sit on the jury.
  • Shii Ann Huang was the only member of the jury that did not make it in their first editions.
