Saleisha Stowers Biography (Courtesy Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
Saleisha Stowers, (b. January 10, 1986), is the winner of Cycle 9 of America's Next Top Model. As part of her prize, Stowers won a contract with CoverGirl Cosmetics and will appear on the cover of Seventeen magazine. She has also won a contract with Elite Model Management.
Before becoming a contestant on America's Next Top Model, Stowers was a receptionist in Los Angeles. When she was fourteen years old, she attended Camp T-Zone, Tyra Banks' self-esteem camp for girls. She was recruited for America's Next Top Model, which she subsequently won. Before appearing on Cycle 9, Stowers also appeared in a commercial for fast-food restaurant Wendy's with actor Tom Lenk for the Jalapeño Cheddar Double Melt hamburger. She also appeared in a Cycle 6 episode of America's Next Top Model, and as a model on the Tyra Banks Show for fashion designer and Project Runway contestant Rami Kashou.
Controversy
After Stowers' win, there was controversy regarding her eligibility to appear on the show. The rules in the application for the show state that a contestant must not have appeared as a model in a national advertising campaign during the last five years. There is debate among viewers of the show over whether Stowers' 2006 commercial for Wendy's could be considered an advertising campaign, and whether her past experience as a model could be considered an unfair advantage. Also, she appeared in an episode of Ugly Betty (Season 1, Episode 3; around the 9th minute, in the lift). Other viewers reason that many past contestants, including recent winner Jaslene, had some experience in modeling before being on the show. The CW said in a statement that Stowers did disclose her participation in the Wendy's spot, and "after reviewing the commercial, it was determined that her appearance did not amount to "modeling" experience, and therefore did not exclude her from participating in the show."
