America's Next Top Model Cycle 2, which premiered on January 13, 2004, is the second season of America's Next Top Model hosted by supermodel Tyra Banks, which aims to find the next top fashion model. The cycle's catch-phrase is "They Are All Gorgeous, But Only One Has What It Takes". This was the first and only season to feature a cast of 12 contestants. The international destination for the cycle was Milan, Italy. The winner won a contract with IMG Models, a fashion spread within Jane magazine, and a cosmetics campaign with Sephora. The winner was 23 year old Yoanna House from Jacksonville, Florida, who became the oldest and first bi-racial winner of America's Next Top Model. Episode SummariesThe Girl Who OversleptOriginal Airdate: January 13, 2004The girls are picked up on a decked out bus in New York where they meet each other and start sizing up the competition. When they get off the bus, they meet Tyra for the first time, then go straight onto a show. Their first runway show is held on a US Navy ship. April puts on the wrong clothes, until Jenascia steps in to help her take them off. Tyra watches the girls and comments, "They really don't know what they're doing." That evening they go to their new home. It is a funky, modern, blinged out suite. They then go to a fancy restaurant, where Camille says that the other girls were embarrassing her, especially Yoanna, who had never been to such a fancy place and stole a roll of toilet paper. For their first photo shoot, the girls are cast into Garden of Eden nude photo shoot for Adlib Fresh Look contacts, where they are wearing only sequins and body paint. This doesn't go over well with Anna and she decides not to participate. Jenascia oversleeps and comes late for the shoot. She gets angry at April for not waking her up, after she helps her at the runway show. At the first judging session, the judges are put off by the fact that Jenascia was late. However, they ultimately choose to eliminate Anna for refusing to do the photo shoot and not being 100% clear when asked why.
The Girl Who Has a TemperOriginal Airdate: January 20, 2004After the first elimination, the remaining eleven girls receive runway training from J. Alexander. At a walking reward challenge, Catie's gracefulness won her a trip to Carmen Marc Valvo's cocktail party. At their photo shoot, the girls are required to style themselves using Steve Madden shoes, before they pick their own best shot for the week. At the second meeting with the judging panel, Bethany is cut, as the judges feel that she didn't know how to correctly position her large bust in photographs, despite Shandi's lack of confidence and terrible walk.
The Girl Who Can Cry At The Drop Of A HatOriginal Airdate: January 27, 2004The girls get their makeovers, then Jay Manuel tests their make-up skill by giving the girl 15 minutes to do their make-up with one mirror, set of brushes, and palette. The winner, Yoanna, gets a dinner with 3 friends, Sara, April, Xiomara, while the rest of the girls shop, prepare, and serve the dinner. After the challenge Shandi collapses on the floor from low blood sugar. During the dinner Catie and Heather bond over being alienated from the group. The next day at the photo shoot the girls arrive at a very weird, scary looking building. The photo is shot suspended over a ledge over a giant hole in the building wearing Laundry by Shelli Segal. Catie struggles because her ultimate fear is falling to her death, but goes through with 12 frames beautifully. While the judges are deliberating at the elimination, Catie has a fight with Xiomara. Xiomara claims that her poor photo was due to Jay's attention to Catie, claiming that he had to prepare her for when her turn was and he didn't really pay a lot of attention to Xiomara's shoot. In front of the judges, Catie's attitude is defensive and strong, but backstage, she passes out and everyone starts fanning her. Xiomara and Heather are in the bottom two, but Heather is eliminated for her lack of versatility and experience.
The Girl Who Needs Six Months Of Modeling SchoolOriginal Airdate: February 3, 2004Mercedes' hair starts falling out from the high dosage of medication for her lupus, and Camille is late for boxing with Martin Snow, April wins the workout challenge. The girls have a challenge to dress in their personal style. As they are being critiqued, Catie gets a comment about looking hooker-like and takes it too personally by back-talking the judge and crying. The girls go to meet Betsey Johnson and test their personal style, but are only allowed to use everyone else"s clothes, not their own. The winner, Shandi, gets a fabulous dinner at JL with Adrianne Curry and two friends, Yoanna and Xiomara. Before Xiomara leaves, however, she gets mad at Camille for breaking one of her earrings. The girls' photo shoot this week involves them being celebrities where Xiomara is offended at having to portray Grace Jones. Xiomara is upset that she has to become a darker color. Mercedes uses the pain of her illness to portray Billie Holiday's pain.
The Girl Who Is A Visual OrgasmOriginal Airdate: February 10, 2004The girls undergo personality coaching. Janice asks some very hard questions for the reward. Shandi breaks down after revealing her family treats her like the black sheep. Secrets and relationships are revealed in this week's episode. Mercedes wins the reward, a shopping spree, for answering the questions best. She takes Sara. Also as part of their reward, Mercedes', Sara's, and Tyra's moms all show up. The girls pose underwater for Quench Water. April has the best picture, Catie's pose gets great reviews and Xiomara's photo looks like a "walrus wearing chiffon". This eliminates her, despite Camille's annoying personality.
The Girl Whose Lip Puffed UpOriginal Airdate: February 17, 2004The girls' photo shoot for this week is simple beauty shots, photographs taken in black and white that focus on their face. After that, the girls are taken to an acting challenge where they will have to act out a scene. Camille mixes the lines and is called hopeless by the coach. The last stop for the girls is a fast-paced action packed Matrix-like commercial for Rollitos chips. April is hailed for her performance in the commercial and photo shoot. Camille and Catie fall flat in both areas. Camille is criticized for her attitude and Catie is sent home because the judges feel she is not emotionally ready to handle modeling.
The Girl Who Is Dripping With HypocrisyOriginal Airdate: February 24, 2004The girls step it up in more ways then one at this week's challenge. And some girls prove they are more than just great beauties, but that they also have brains. During this episode, instead of a photo shoot, the girls perform in Tyra's music video for "Shake Ya Body". In the video April nearly succeeds in pushing Yoanna off the runway. Surprisingly, Shandi performs the best in her solo, while Yoanna messes up again and falls. Yoanna is in the bottom two for her poor performance in the video for the fall. However, after tearfully thanking the girls for being part of her dream of starting a music career, Tyra eliminated Sara, who the panel felt was too pin-up and sexy for the fashion world. The episode was followed by the premiere of Tyra's video, "Shake Ya Body."
The Girl With The Signature WalkOriginal Airdate: March 2, 2004The remaining girls are taken to a restaurant where Tyra introduces their international destination for the cycle, Milan, Italy. The girls then go on go-sees where Shandi is described as the best high fashion model, Mercedes as being a bit commercial, April as photographing well but weak in other areas, Yoanna has to work on her body and Camille wins the challenge for strong presence. Camille implies that Yoanna has an eating disorder at dinner in front of Tyra, which is not true. The girls do a high fashion shoot for Solstice sunglasses. April has mixed reviews, Camille looks pigeon-toed and is the photographer's least favorite, Mercedes looks commercial, Yoanna hides her body well and Shandi takes some of the photographer's best shots all year. She is also praised for her response to rather harsh designers (which turned out to be an actors testing the models' attitudes) when asked why she should get book. Shandi simply responds that maybe if the designer would look at her photos and possibly see something special there. Camille gets the worst review, giving off an attitude that "she knows it all". While she's walking for the designers, they ask her why she walks like that, and thus Camille coins the infamous phrase "This is my signature walk, and it's the walk that's going to make me famous." Mercedes is in the bottom two for looking commercial and for a lack of editorial potential, but it is Camille who is eliminated because of her attitude and getting very defensive all the time when critiqued.
The Girl Who Is Afraid Of SnakesOriginal Airdate: March 9, 2004This is the recap episode. The episode is named for April, whose fear of snakes was revealed in this episode after a Tyra Mail hinted that the girls may have to deal with such creatures. The Girl Who CheatedOriginal Airdate: March 16, 2004The male models are invited to come over to the house and have fun with the girls, where Shandi who is overwhelmed by loneliness of being apart with her boyfriend, ends up having sex with another male model. Lambasted by a sense of guilt, she calls her boyfriend, Eric, the next day and tells him what has happened. Eric goes mad and yells at her before finally hangs up. The following day, Shandi calls him back and he wishes her luck in the next photo shoot. This week, the girls learn how to compliment their body with their attire. Then, they are put into test where they must shop at a flea market and find an outfit that is high fashion and complements their body the best. Shandi is chosen as the winner and picks Yoanna to join in her reward. For this week's photo shoot, the girls team up to do a sensual, romantic nude photo shoot. At panel, Mercedes impress the judges with her ability to turn out a piece of cloth into looking like a high fashion dress. April is criticized for trying to take control of the photo shoot. In the end, she is sent home in her first appearance in the bottom two for being too technical.
The Girl Who Is America's Next Top ModelOriginal Airdate: March 23, 2004For the final photo shoot, the final three girls have a beauty shot where they are dressed in the opposite of their normal style. At judging, Mercedes is hailed for finally looking like a true fashion model. Shandi and Yoanna land in the bottom two, both for their inability to handle pressure. In the end, Shandi becomes the next girl to be eliminated while Yoanna moves on to the final two. After the shoot, the girls meet up with Dean and Dan of Dsquared with whom they will walk in their fashion show. During fashion show, Yoanna breaks her high heels and has to use Mercedes' heel. Despite that, she successfully works out the runway show. At panel, the judges are immensely impressed by Mercedes and they feel that she stole the runway show. Tyra recognizes the uniqueness of Yoanna's face, saying that it hardly comes by. She also feels that Yoanna knows the modeling industry better than Mercedes. After a long and hard deliberation, both finalists are called in and Yoanna is declared America's Next Top Model.
