Celebrity Survivor, also known promotionally as Celebrity Survivor: Vanuatu and Australia's Celebrity Survivor, was an Australian television series that screened on the Seven Network in 2006. It was based on the popular reality television show Survivor.
The show was filmed on an island in Vanuatu in the South Pacific and is hosted by former Australian Idol judge and My Restaurant Rules host, Ian "Dicko" Dickson. The executive producer of Celebrity Survivor is David Mason, who also produces other shows on the Seven Network, such as Medical Emergency.
The series was filmed over twenty-five days, or three weeks, from late May to early June 2006, with promotional advertising beginning in July. From promos and footage shown on the Seven Network, it can be seen that Celebrity Survivor has borrowed many elements from the U.S. franchise's ninth season, Survivor: Vanuatu - Islands of Fire. The eventual winner, or "Sole Survivor", of the show will be donating AU$100,000 to the charity of their choice and the other contestants' charities will also be receiving AU$5000 each.
While the Nine Network currently have the rights to screen the U.S. version of Survivor, after their failed 2002 local Survivor project, Australian Survivor, the Seven Network found a loophole in their contract and obtained rights to produce Celebrity Survivor. The new series joined the many celebrity-oriented reality programs already in their lineup, such as It Takes Two and Dancing with the Stars. Castaway Television, who produced Australian Survivor, are once again involved in the making of an Australian franchise of Survivor.
The one-hour show was rated PG (parental guidance recommended) and aired in the 8:30 PM timeslot during Thursday nights on the Seven Network.
Before the series began, Dicko - the host - and a select few of the Celebrity Survivor contestants appeared on Sunrise, the Seven Network's breakfast news show, to promote their series. The five players to be on Sunrise that morning were Amber, David, Imogen, Justin and Wayne. This parallels to what occurs in the U.S. (with the show being promoted on The Early Show, CBS' own breakfast news program) and what happened during the Nine Network's own venture - Australian Survivor (the series was featured on the early morning show, Today, and also on A Current Affair).
The advertisements for Olay Total Effects anti-wrinkle cream, broadcast most notably in the ad breaks before the Tribal Council results are revealed, show both Amber and Nicolle.
