Production

Development and filming

CBS renewed the series for its 20th season in June 16, 2011. This season spans a little over in twenty-two cities and five continents, with first-time visits to Paraguay and Azerbaijan. Visits to Argentina, Tanzania, Italy, and Germany are also confirmed for this season.

Since the thirteenth season of the Amazing Race, teams were offered more than one Fast Forward on the race. Along with more than two of the them since the fourth season. This makes season 20 the most offered Fast Forwards since the previously stated reductions. Throughout the season, there was at three that were all used. Two of these teams had used these and had made it to the 'Final Three'.

In Leg 8, a new record was set for the Double U-Turn on this season. Both teams (Brendon & Rachel and Vanessa & Ralph) had survived the U-Turn and did not get eliminated.

During Leg 10, Bopper & Mark won the Fast Forward, yet were eliminated on the same leg; marking the second time in the show's history that this happened. (This last occurred to Dennis & Andrew on Leg 3 of season 3.)

Casting

The cast includes former Big Brother contestant Brendon Villegas and season 13 winner Rachel Reilly as well as Major League Soccer player Andrew Weber, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus clowns Dave and Cherie Gregg and professional golfer Maiya Tanaka who previously appeared on the Golf Channel's reality competition The Big Break. It also includes a pair of federal agents, United States Border Patrol agents, and dating divorcees.

After the completion of the race, fan favorites William "Bopper" Minton and Mark Jackson were awarded a check for $10,000 from the hosts of the daytime talk show The Talk.

On September 8, 2012, Brendon & Rachel were married.

Canadian broadcaster CTV also airs The Amazing Race on Sundays. Episodes aired at 8:00 p.m. Eastern, Central, and Atlantic (9:00 p.m. Pacific and Mountain). The only exception to this was the broadcast of the second episode which conflicted with CTV's broadcast of the 84th Academy Awards; The Amazing Race instead was shown at 6:00 p.m. in the Eastern, Central, and Atlantic time zones, and immediately after the broadcast of the Oscars in the Pacific and Mountain time zones.
