Ryan Seacrest's hosting credentials are indisputable, but can the unflappable American Idol host carry a tune?

Viewers may find out September 16, as Seacrest said that instead of delivering an opening monologue as host of the 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, producers are planning a musical number that he'll be included in.

"We're obviously still in the putting-it-together stages, and I'll be back in Los Angeles this weekend to home in on what we're doing with the entire program," Seacrest told reporters during a Wednesday conference call, The Hollywood Reporter reported Thursday.  "But we are going to open the show with a musical number, and that musical number, as you can well imagine, will be like nothing you've seen in years past."

While Seacrest confirmed the Emmys will open with a musical number, he added he "may or may not" participate depending on "how confident I feel on the 16th."  Regardless of whether he sings or not, Seacrest said he plans to follow in the footsteps of former hosts, a group that mostly consists comedians.

"I'm going to try and make the show fun... and I'm going to try to have a sense of humor about it, and I hope the people watching have a sense of humor, too," he told reporters, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  "Some people laugh just by reading the line, 'Ryan Seacrest is hosting the Emmys.'"

Seacrest might not have much time to yuck it up with the audience considering he'll also be hosting E!'s live pre-show coverage.  While his red carpet role was a given considering his role as E! News' lead anchor, Seacrest said he couldn't pass up the Emmys hosting gig.

"It was really an honor to be asked to do it," said Seacrest, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  "It was a pretty simple decision. I think if you were me and you were asked, you'd say 'Sure, what time?'"

The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled to air live from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium on Sunday, September 16 at 8PM ET on Fox.
