Tori Spelling's husband Dean McDermott is clearly trying to get people to see past the story of his infidelity.

McDermott, who stars on True Tori with Spelling, cheated on his wife while away on a business trip in December 2013 with a young woman named Emily Goodhand. Spelling, 41, has since been dealing with the aftermath of such a scandal but has chosen to forgive him and work things out.

They are now "on good terms," McDermott told E! News, admitting that "viewers may not be ready for real reality TV."

True Tori currently airs on Tuesday nights on Lifetime, and the couple's hardships almost air in real time. The 47-year-old dad has been viewed as "a monster" since the incident, but he's asking people to view him differently.

"I would love for the public to see me as just a human being," said McDermott, who has recently expressed his frustration with "haters" on Twitter.

"I'm just trying. I'm trying to get through this life, I'm trying to do some good and I'm trying to teach my kids right from wrong and just have a good life. And I messed up."

McDermott checked himself into a rehabilitation center in January and has insisted he regrets his actions.

"People make mistakes, but those mistakes don't define them. It's what you do after the mistakes that really shows your true character," McDermott told E! News.

"So I would like people to take away from all of this that I'm a good guy that messed up that is just trying to put my life back together -- our life back together."
