As in the first season, twelve finalists chosen from thousands of contestants in a series of nationwide competitions will compete for the grand prize of a recording contract with a major record label. The finalists will then move to Nashville where they will live together in a fully-wired house, with cameras recording their daily quest to become the next great country music sensation. Each week, the contestants will compete live on stage and the viewing audience will ultimately choose one grand prize winner who will receive a recording contract from a major record label.

The first season of Nashville Star premiered on March 8, 2002 on USA Network. Buddy Jewell of Oseola, Arkansas emerged as the first Nashville Star winner over the course of the nine-week competition. As part of Jewell's prize, Clint Black produced Jewell's first album, and his debut single "Help Pour Out the Rain" (Lacey's Song) was the highest charting debut by a solo country artist in over a decade.
