John McCain has confirmed that his wife Cindy McCain did turn down a chance to participate in Dancing with the Stars' upcoming eighth season.  However according to the 2008 Republican U.S. presidential nominee, the decision was made mutually.

"Well, we discussed it and we -- but we decided it just was not a good idea. You know, Cindy's on her second knee. She's had it replaced," McCain told Larry King during a Thursday night appearance on CNN's Larry King Live. "I think it would have been -- it would have been very challenging."

"But I'm proud of her work and charity around the world, Operation Smile, a number of other organizations -- humanitarian efforts that she's involved in and is continuing to be involved in," he added as he danced away from the topic.

Last week, the New York Post had reported that Cindy McCain had wanted to participate on the popular ABC's reality dancing competition but her husband had rejected the idea.

"Just before Thanksgiving, Cindy McCain started talks with producers to appear as a dancer on the show. She wanted to do it very badly," a source told the New York Post. "But this week, Senator McCain 'put the kibosh on it.'

Although Dancing with the Stars isn't really known for infusing politics into the show, Cindy McCain isn't the first politically-connected celebrity to be approached about competing on the ABC dance reality competition.

Last year, former Indiana senator and U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle was approached about competing on Dancing with the Stars' seventh season, however he decided against it.
