Joe Amabile has revealed how his short-lived stint on The Bachelorette has affected his mindset about being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

Joe underwent surgery earlier this month to remove a lesion in his brain, which turned out to be a low-grade astrocytoma, a type of malignant brain tumor.

On August 26, Joe took to Instagram Stories to share with fans what's been on his mind lately.
"It has been three weeks since my surgery. This is my mindset moving forward," Joe began.

"When I was 30, I went on The Bachelorette, and I got sent home on Night 1, like most of you know."
Joe briefly appeared on Becca Kufrin's season of The Bachelorette, the show's 14th season, which aired in 2018 on ABC.
"I thought at the time it was the worst thing that could ever happen to me. It felt pathetic; I felt pathetic. It wound up being the best thing," Joe explained.
Although his time on The Bachelorette was over in the blink of an eye, he subsequently appeared on two seasons of Bachelor in Paradise.
During his second Paradise run in 2021, Joe fell in love with -- and got engaged to -- his now-wife Serena Pitt. The pair legally wed in October 2022 and then enjoyed a larger wedding in September 2023.

Joe also competed on Dancing with the Stars' 27th season alongside pro Jenna Johnson. They were eliminated only one episode shy of the finale.
But at 40 years old, Joe was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.
"[That's] WAY worse than getting sent home Night 1," Joe quipped.
"But I'm going to figure out how I can turn this into the best thing ever. So if anyone's got any suggestions..."

Joe wrote in the caption of his post, "Keep in mind I'm starting from a really good place and I'm one of the lucky ones. They removed the whole tumor, it came back low grade, and there's a new medication that puts to sleep whatever tumor cells I have left over."
Serena revealed on her "Not Married to This" podcast that "there is space" for Joe to "push himself a little bit" -- but he has to be careful.
"He can test where the line is, and sometimes [he] can push it too far," Serena admitted, adding how Joe has struggled with headaches, mental fatigue and speech.
Joe recently posted a video of himself going for a run after removing 23 staples from his head. He also said he'd like to run in the 2026 New York City marathon once he fully recovers from his surgery.
Joe first revealed his brain tumor diagnosis to the world on July 13, and then after the operation, he revealed on August 6 that he'd been discharged from the hospital.

Joe and Serena opened up about Joe's health crisis during the July 16 episode of their "Not Married to This" podcast.
