Hunter Montgomery prides himself on being a romantic

Hunter says he's always been a romantic.

Even as a child, Hunter can recall writing sweet love letters to girls and being the guy to surprise his crushes with mix tapes or flowers.

Hunter claims that he will never stop believing in romance because "when you hit the mark, there really is no better feeling."

Hunter said the night he met Katie on the show, he was actually celebrating his fourteenth year of sobriety, to the exact day.

Hunter recalled of his dark past in a March 2017 Instagram post, "I was in a hopeless state of mind, and I was trapped in a prison of fear, selfishness, resentment, and dishonesty."

"I woke up every day to a constant struggle and fight against my own existence. I was nauseated at every aspect of myself. But one day, I was finally beaten into a state of willingness, and I decided that I was ready to start living," he continued.

"I found a solution in a group of folks who were just like me, who were once in that hopeless state of mind, and I fought for what they had."

Hunter now challenges people to talk about their experiences and open up about their traumas, obstacles and hardships.

"I'm really used to wearing my heart on my sleeve and telling my story without holding anything back because the only way that you can really affect people is if you're having those real conversations and if you're being vulnerable, and I think that's what we need more of," Hunter said during a late June episode of Tayshia Adams' Click Bait podcast.

"People going through a battle and coming out on the other side, I think that's what people need to hear."

Hunter has been married and divorced before

Hunter married a woman with whom he was convinced he'd spend the rest of his life, but after several years of marriage, he admitted that he totally "shifted priorities."

Hunter said he began working too much and therefore drifted apart from his wife.

"I failed at marriage... I never imagined divorce for myself," Hunter cried on a recent episode of The Bachelorette.

"It's absurd. So I tell you that, [Katie], because when I'm in that position again, I will cherish it. I will never stop maintaining that love."

Hunter said on his Click Bait appearance that he had decided to share his divorce story during a group date because he wanted to treat it like a one-on-one date with Katie since time on The Bachelorette is so limited.

Hunter is a single dad with two children

Hunter welcomed two children with his ex-wife while they were still married: daughter Madison Carter and son Bennett James.

Hunter has called his kids "amazing" and said he lives to make them happy.

Hunter admitted the divorce negatively impacted his children, which still hurts him to this day, but he will fight for love from now on and never give up on marriage if he's ever in that position again.
