Los Angeles County authorities are investigating singer Britney Spears for driving with her baby in her lap instead of strapped in his car seat.

A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy went to the pop singer's home in Malibu, Calif., Tuesday to gather information for child welfare investigators, The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

Photos were published this week of the young mother driving her sport utility vehicle through Malibu with her 4-month-old son in her lap. State law says children must be in car seats in the back of vehicles.

Spears, 24, has claimed she was being pursued by paparazzi and she did not put her son in his car seat in order to keep him safe.

The baby was in her lap for about 2 minutes, a source told the Times.

The Los Angeles County Department of Family and Children Services doesn't comment on investigations, the newspaper said.
