Paris Hilton will serve at least 23 days for a probation violation in a cell away from the general population, the Los Angeles County sheriff's office said.
The decision, made after jail officials reviewed her case file, involves significantly less time than the 45-day sentence she originally received but more than other celebrities have served for similar violations, The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday. She may not serve the entire sentence, jail official said, because the state allows time off for good behavior.
Hilton pleaded no contest to driving under the influence after Los Angeles police pulled her over in Hollywood Sept. 7 for speeding and making an illegal left turn. After she failed a field sobriety test, Hilton had her license suspended but continued to drive, violating the terms of her probation.
During the time her driving privileges were suspended, Hilton was pulled over three times by three different law enforcement agencies.
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said Hilton would live in the "special needs housing unit" reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates. The unit has 12 two-person cells.
"She will do fine if she follows the rules," Whitmore told the Times.
