This will be the Oscar winner's first lead role in a horror movie.

Deadline was the first to report the casting news Monday. The film's producer confirmed the news by posting a screenshot of the article on the studio's Instagram Stories.

"Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn't be happier to have her join this Exorcist film," Flanagan is quoted as saying.

The film will be an original story, not a sequel, prequel or reboot of the 1973 classic starring Ellen Burstyn, Max Von Sydow and Linda Blair.
