Lionsgate released a new still from Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair on Thursday. Additionally, the studio confirmed 70mm and 35mm locations for the Dec. 5. release.
The still comes from the extended animated sequence in the first half of the film. The anime sequence explaining Yakuza boss O-ren Ishii's (Lucy Liu) past was truncated in the 2003 release of Kill Bill Vol. 1.
In The Whole Bloody Affair, the animated sequence is extended to show more of O-ren's childhood and her violent revenge against those who killed her family. The photo shows young O-ren slicing an opponent with a samurai sword with animated blood splatter.
Liu recently spoke with UPI for her upcoming film Rosemead. She was excited to learn that the extended anime revolves around her character.
"Wow, you just told me something I didn't know," Liu said. "I only found out about The Whole Bloody Affair, I think, when everyone else did so I was really excited."
O-Ren is one of four assassins The Bride (Uma Thurman) fights on her way to Bill (David Carradine), her former lover and boss.
Additionally, tickets are on sale as of Thursday and Lionsgate has updated the final runtime as 275 minutes with a 15-minute intermission. The Whole Bloody Affair includes additional scenes, alternate dialogue and removes a teaser from the end of the first half and recap from the beginning of the second.
70mm prints will screen at the Vista in Los Angeles, which writer/director Quentin Tarantino owns, AMC Lincoln Square in New York, Alamo New Mission in San Francisco, Calif., Cinemark West Plano & XD in Dallas, Texas, Regal Colorado Mills in Denver, Colo., Coolidge Corner Theater in Boston, Mass., Hollywood Theater in Portland, Ore., AFI Silver Theater in Washington, D.C. and Cineplex Cinemas Varsity and VIP in Toronto, Ontario.
Four 35mm venues include the New Beverly in Los Angeles, Tarantino's other owned theater, Philadelphia Film Center in Pennsylvania, Playhouse Cinema in Hamilton, Ontario and Picturehouse Central Shaftesbury Avenue and Odeon Leicester Square in London, England.
