The "Dr." in Drew Pinsky's moniker apparently came in handy over the weekend.

The Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew star helped save the life of a high school football player who suffered a head injury and slipped into a coma during a Friday night game, The CW's KTLA-TV affiliate in Los Angeles reported Monday.

Pinsky was attending the game because his son Doug plays for Pasadena's Polytechnic School, and he came to the aid of one of his son's teammates who had suffered a head injury.

While the player -- who school officials identified as Jackson Allan -- was able to come off the field, sit on the bench and converse with teammates, KTLA reported his condition subsequently worsened.

Allan complained of a headache before he collapsed, fell into a coma and stopped breathing -- causing Pinsky to administer CPR before Paramedics arrived.

"Jackson, accompanied by his father Les, was taken to the Harbor UCLA Medical Center, where he was met by his mother Rhonda. Jackson underwent successful surgery to relieve pressure on the brain from internal bleeding. Jackson's family members, as well as Poly players, coaches, parents, friends, and administrators, were at the hospital," read a statement released by Polytechnic's Head of School, Debbie Reed, and obtained by KTLA.

"Jackson will have a lengthy recovery, during which I know that he and his family will have the support of our community."

Reed also praised Pinsky's quick action.

"We are especially grateful for the heroic efforts of Dr. Pinsky and prompt care and attention of Dr. Lewis, a faculty member and emergency room doctor at Harbor Medical," reads the statement. "Together with the emergency medical personnel, they made all the difference in Jackson's progress."

In addition to Celebrity Rehab, Pinsky also stars in its Sober House and Sex Rehab spinoffs for VH1, as well as Sex... With Mom and Dad on MTV.

He is also the assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California and medical director for the Department of Chemical Dependency Services at Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena, according to KTLA.
