Wolf Totem is an upcoming Chinese-language drama film based on the 2004 Chinese semiautobiographical novel of the same name by Lu Jiamin. The film is directed by French director Jean-Jacques Annaud. According to Annaud, the producers sought to produce a film adaptation of the book but did not want to use a Chinese or U.S. director. They had also wanted a film to be released in time for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Annaud began development of the project in 2009. By April 2013, the lead roles were cast, and with a production budget of , filming began in Inner Mongolia, where the book is set. Annaud is filming in 3D, and the film is scheduled to be released on , 2015.
