Drawing what he calls "courage" through a whiskey bottle, he severely beats and nearly kills his wife, Judy (Kozak) one night, nearly killing his girlfriend, Beth French (Gibney) not long after during another one of his violent rages. To avoid having to spend time in jail, Paul is forced to get psychological help to be able to overcome his problems.
