Stone Phillips Biography

Stone Stockton Phillips (born December 2, 1954) is an American television reporter and correspondent. He is the former co-anchor of Dateline NBC, a newsmagazine TV show. He also has worked as a substitute anchor for NBC Nightly News and Today and as a substitute moderator on Meet the Press. He is known for his clear delivery and appearance of gravitas. This image was satirized by actor Rob Lowe on Saturday Night Live, and by Phillips himself in two appearances on The Colbert Report. Phillips' delivery was part of the inspiration for comedian Stephen Colbert's persona on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Early years

Phillips was born in Texas City, Texas, and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. His father, Victor, was a chemical engineer and his mother, Grace, was a teacher. Stone has two siblings: brother, Vic, and sister, Minta.

Education

Phillips attended Parkway West High School in Ballwin, Missouri. He was an honor student and starting quarterback on the football team.

While attending Yale University, he was a starting quarterback on the football team and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in philosophy. He was also a member of Yale's Scroll and Key secret society.

Broadcasting career

In 1986, Phillips landed his first major on-air role as a correspondent for 20/20. That year, he also was a substitute host on Good Morning America, and a sports anchor on ABC's World News Sunday. While at NBC News, Phillips hosted Weekend Magazine with Stone Phillips. In February 1994, Phillips interviewed the notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. On October 17, 2005, Phillips was a guest on the premiere episode of The Colbert Report.

Phillips co-anchored Dateline NBC from its inception in 1992 until July 2, 2007, when NBC, in a cost-cutting move, did not renew his $7 million contract.

As of 2012, Phillips was contributing reports to the PBS Newshour. In 2013 he reported on golf course water usage for The Golf Channel.

Family

Phillips lives in New York with his wife, Debra, and their son, Streeter Phillips (b. 1988).
