Stewart Wright

Stewart Wright Biography

Stewart Alec Weatherley Wright (born 12 January 1974) is an English actor. After his breakthrough playing Nick Levick in award winning mockumentary series People Like Us (1999) he has enjoyed a range of leading and character roles in many productions across theatre, film and television. He took a break from acting in 2006 to focus on developing his own work. This experimental period included a critically acclaimed collaboration with Will Adamsdale to create a series for BBC Radio 4, among other successful projects. He returned to acting in 2009 through productions at Bristol Old Vic and was back on our screens starring alongside Alison Steadman in ITV's Love and Marriage in 2013. He now combines his acting career with his own self generated projects.

Early life

Wright was born in Hammersmith, London, in 1974 the son of two doctors. He attended Wellington College in Berkshire in the early 1990s where his passion for rugby led to his captaining the Ist XV and being a non-travelling reserve for the England U18s. An injury encouraged him to focus on his other passion and he secured a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama, where he completed a BA in acting in 1996.

Career

After People Like Us he went onto roles in a number of popular shows including Smack the Pony, Black Books and The Vicar of Dibley. His first lead role in a TV series came in 2002 when he played Eddie Chisolm alongside Sally Phillips in Rescue Me written by David Nicholls. His theatre work includes Howard Davies' production of All My Sons at The National Theatre and his many rep theatre roles include Nick Bottom in David Farrs' A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Prince of Wales in The Madness of George III at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Wright is perhaps best known to a worldwide audience for his portrayal of PC Mark Mylow in Doc Martin. He has played character parts in films such as Bridget Jones' Diary, Incendiary and Ali G Indahouse. It was his break from acting in 2006 that marked a turning point in his career. He tried his hand at writing and was commissioned to co-create and perform 2, 6 x 15 min late night comedy series for BBC Radio 4. In this exploratory phase he also started an improvisation group and co-created a one-man contemporary clown show that led to him being asked to play 7-year-old Roger Walker in Tom Morris' West End production of Swallows and Amazons. In his next and most challenging leading role to date in the ITV comedy drama series Love and Marriage, he was directed by filmmaker Debbie Isitt. He has since played his biggest film role in Isitts' latest improvised film Nativity 3 and gone onto achieve his career ambition of playing the Dame in Pantomime at Lyric Hammersmith.
