Katie Chang Biography

Katie Chang is an American actress. She played one of the lead roles in Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, a 2013 movie inspired by the real break-ins of Hollywood celebrities by a group of California teenagers. The movie, which was shot when she was 16, also starred Israel Broussard, Taissa Farmiga, Claire Julien, and Emma Watson.

Early life

Chang is a native of Winnetka, Illinois, and is of one quarter Korean descent. She was trained at the Wilmette Theatre's Actors Training Center. She attended New Trier High School.

The Bling Ring and after

Chang earned praise for her portrayal of Rebecca, the group's ringleader. Rolling Stone described her as "mesmerizing", the Chicago Tribune called her a "performer of serious promise,", The Hollywood Reporter said she "marks herself as someone to watch," and the Daily-Herald noted her "impressively assured movie debut". Coppola explained her choice of casting such a "fresh face" in a lead role by saying, "There's sort of a naturalness, as opposed to having worked a lot, being kid actors."

After The Bling Ring, Chang starred in Birder's Guide to Everything, a 2013 movie directed by Rob Meyer that also stars Kodi Smit-McPhee and Ben Kingsley.

Personal Life

Chang started attending Columbia University in the fall of 2013 with the intention of continuing acting.
