Interstellar

Interstellar Information

Interstellar is an upcoming science fiction film directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. The film features a team of space travelers going through a wormhole. Nolan combined his idea with an existing script by his brother Jonathan Nolan that was originally developed for Paramount Pictures and producer Lynda Obst. Warner Bros., who distributed Nolan's previous films, negotiated with Paramount, traditionally a rival studio, to have a stake in Interstellar. Legendary Pictures, who formerly partnered with Warner Bros., also acquired a stake. The three studios co-financed the film, which is being produced under Nolan's label Syncopy and Lynda Obst Productions. The director also hired cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema since his previous collaborator Wally Pfister was busy working on his directorial debut. Interstellar will be filmed with a combination of 35mm anamorphic and IMAX film photography. Principal photography began in August 2013 in Alberta, Canada. Interstellar will be released on , 2014. Paramount will distribute the film in the United States, and Warner Bros. will distribute the film in other territories.

The film's cast includes the following:

Production

Interstellar is directed by Christopher Nolan and produced by Emma Thomas and Lynda Obst. Nolan co-wrote a screenplay with his brother Jonathan Nolan. The project began development in June 2006 when Paramount Pictures and filmmaker Steven Spielberg announced plans for a science fiction film based on a treatment by Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist. Obst was attached to produce the film, which Variety said would "take several years to come together" before Spielberg directed it. By March 2007, Jonathan Nolan was hired to write a screenplay for Interstellar. Later in 2007, Thorne told The Australian that the film "is based on warped space-time". Thorne also said that people wanted him to be cast as himself in the film.

The film remained in development for several years. In January 2013, Christopher Nolan entered negotiations with Paramount and Warner Bros. to direct Interstellar. Nolan intended to write a screenplay based on his own idea that he would merge with his brother's screenplay. By the following March, Nolan was confirmed to direct Interstellar, which would be produced under his label Syncopy and Lynda Obst Productions. Though Paramount and Warner Bros. are traditionally rival studios, Warner Bros., who released Nolan's Batman films and works with Nolan's Syncopy, sought a stake in Nolan's production of Interstellar for Paramount. Warner Bros. agreed to give Paramount its rights to co-finance the next film in the Friday the 13th horror franchise and to have a stake in a future film based on the TV series South Park. The negotiation also involved Warner Bros. agreeing to let Paramount co-finance "a to-be-determined A-list Warners property". In August 2013, Legendary Pictures was announced to be a third co-financier for Interstellar. It had a partnership with Warner Bros. for eight years until the previous June, when the partnership broke up. Despite the split, Legendary acquired a stake in Interstellar and reportedly would "finance 25 percent or more" of the film.

In April 2013, Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway were cast in the film's starring roles. Other well-known actors eventually joined what would become "an all-star cast". For the film's production, cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema was hired for Interstellar. Wally Pfister had been the cinematographer on all of Nolan's past films but was not available for Interstellar due to working on his directorial debut, the 2014 science fiction film Transcendence. Interstellar will combine 35mm anamorphic and IMAX film photography. Principal photography began on , 2013 in Alberta, Canada.
