Time Inc. to stop publishing Life magazine for a fourth time

UPI News Service, 03/26/2007

U.S. magazine publisher Time Inc. will stop publishing Life magazine, which has had three other lives since ending standalone weekly circulation 35 years ago.

Life, currently a newspaper supplement, will stop publishing April 20, continuing through books and by putting its collection of 10 million images online, Time said Monday. The company cited a "decline in the newspaper business" and poor advertising outlook as reasons for its decision to shutter the publication.

Forty-two people will lose their jobs as a result of the closure, spokeswoman Dawn Bridges told United Press International. The company will try to find new positions for them. Life's publisher and managing editor have been guaranteed other positions within the company.

An undetermined number of jobs will be created with the Web site's launch by the end of the year, Bridges said.

Life has been carried as a Sunday supplement in 103 newspapers, competing against Advance Publications Inc.'s Parade and Gannett Co.'s USA Weekend.

Life began weekly publication in 1936. Emphasizing photojournalism, it dominated the market for more than 30 years, but succumbed to television and changing tastes and ceased publication in 1972.

It appeared intermittently as a "special" until 1978 and as a monthly from 1978 to 2000. It returned as a supplement in 2004.
