Thieves target medical marijuana trash bin

UPI News Service, 03/08/2011

A Colorado woman said thieves are taking trash from a medical marijuana business's garbage container and dumping it out on a nearby trail.

Nancy Strong of the Shooks Run neighborhood in Colorado Springs said she first discovered trash on the creekside trail about two weeks ago, The (Colorado Springs) Gazette reported Monday.

"I was picking it up and found a business name in the trash and called them," Strong said.

She said the business, a medical marijuana growing operation, is in a nearby building owned by attorney Anthony Cross.

"People are going through their trash Dumpster, looking for marijuana debris," she said.

Strong said she called Cross's office when she discovered a second pile of trash a few days later and was told thieves had been using bolt cutters to break into the trash bin.

"We have to make sure the trash doesn't keep showing up on the bike path and make the park look like a dump," she said. "That's really my only concern, not the business."

Julie Postlethwait of the state's medical marijuana enforcement agency said proposed rules would require marijuana debris to be ground up and mixed with non-edible materials, such as oil, to deter thefts.

"This is the first I've heard of Dumpster thieves," Postlethwait said. "That's a new one."
