A 14-year-old basketball player in Wisconsin slid across the floor and was unable to get up due to being impaled by a floorboard.
Video from Sunday's game in the Middleton-Cross Plains School District shows the Wisconsin Heights player slide across the floor on her front and other players and officials soon realize the girl can't get up from the floor.
The cause of the player's trouble turned out to be a floorboard that splintered and impaled her in the stomach area.
"It was 3 to 4 inches long and in some parts, maybe a quarter to a half inch deep," tournament organizer Perry Hibner told WISC-TV.
The girl was taken to a local hospital, where the splinter was determined to have missed all of her vital organs. Hibner said the girl is expected to be back to playing condition this week.
The official said the gym floor was installed only 15 years ago. He said the damaged area has been taped up and the facility is still being used for regular activities. Full repairs are expected this week, he said.
"I just think sometimes strange things happen, and there's no explanation for the phenomena," Hibner said. "Kind of like a strike of lightning where you just don't think those things are going to happen. It was a complete fluke."
