Police in Florida said they arrested an alleged gunman who left his cellphone at the scene of the crime.

Orange Park Police Chief James Boivin said Johnny Lee Walker, 21, was arrested Tuesday on an attempted murder charge after investigators found his phone at the Jennifer Green apartment complex, where John Cornell Puckett III was shot Sept. 26, The (Jacksonville) Florida Times-Union reported Wednesday.

"Sometimes it helps when the bad guys aren't very smart," Boivin said.

Police said the phone contained text messages about a $300 marijuana deal believed to be the motive behind the shooting, which cost Puckett the sight in his right eye.

Walker is also facing a robbery with a firearm charge.

Police said they are seeking further suspects in the case.
