The film "Spotlight" earned the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay Saturday night, while "The Big Short" scored the honor for Best Adapted Screenplay.

"Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief" won the prize for Best Documentary Screenplay.

The awards for excellence in television writing went to "Mad Men" for Drama, "Veep" for Comedy, "Mr. Robot" for New Series and "General Hospital" for Daytime Drama.

"Saints & Strangers" earned the accolade for Original Long Form and "Fargo" the award for Adapted Long Form.
