Mindy McCready, the mother of two young sons, has died of an apparent suicide, People.com said Sunday. The troubled U.S. country singer was 37.

Where and how she took her life were not immediately reported.

The recording artist's once-bright career has been eclipsed in recent years by her battle with drug addiction, legal woes and erratic behavior.

Her boyfriend, singer-songwriter David Wilson, died of a gunshot wound last month. It is still unclear whether it was a suicide, homicide or accident.

McCready has denied any involvement in his death.

Her two sons -- ages 6 years and 10 months -- were placed in foster care after a judge ordered the singer to go into rehab three weeks after Wilson died.

Her family said she had begun using drugs again.
