Nick Viall has responded to his ex-fiancee Vanessa Grimaldi's claim she never wanted to get engaged at the end of his The Bachelor season.

Nick was asked about Vanessa's previous comments she didn't want a marriage proposal on The Bachelor's 21st season during a recent live taping of Off the Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe in Los Angeles.

"We're going to play a nice little game of 'Truth or Drink,'" Kaitlyn told the audience, who gathered for Kaitlyn Bristowe's "KB Fall Crawl Tour" on Monday.

"And I'm going to start it off by asking Nick a hard-hitting question about Vanessa. He's an open book."

The game allowed Nick to choose whether he'd like to drink instead of answering a particular question.

"Vanessa has spoken out pretty recently about not wanting to get engaged on the show. How did you feel about her talking about this publicly? Tell us the truth, or drink," Kaitlyn said.

"You want me to drink?" Nick asked.

The audience yelled, "No," and so did Kaitlyn, who starred on The Bachelorette's eleventh season.

"He's going to drink anyways, so you might as well tell us the truth!" Kaitlyn pushed.

"So, the question is, what do I think about it -- not whether it was true?" Nick asked for clarification.

"Yeah, what do you think about it?" Kaitlyn reiterated.

"Uh, I mean, it was fine, right?" Nick replied.

"'I'm fine' is your reaction to everything!" Kaitlyn shouted, calling him out.

Nick responded, "Well, you try to be level-headed. There's a slight irritation there for sure."

"I get it... It is tough. I didn't listen to the podcast, so I don't know the context in which it was talked about," he said.

Vanessa had appeared on a late October episode of the Let's Talk About It With Taylor Nolan podcast when she revealed that although she and Nick got engaged on The Bachelor finale that aired in March 2017, she was initially against the idea.

"But it is true in the sense that -- it was a crazy season... No one has gone on The Bachelor and gotten to the finals and thought, 'I'm so ready to get engaged!' You truly love the person and you truly think, 'I want to get engaged,' but you're like, 'Am I going to f-cking do this?!'" Nick explained.

Kaitlyn agreed a star of the show can get swept up in the moment, which is something she could definitely relate to given her engagement to Shawn Booth, whom she had dated for about three years before their split in late 2018.

Nick admitted, "Vanessa definitely had her reluctance, and we were both, like, 'This is insane, but I really love you.' And so, I don't know her intentions, right? I didn't listen to the podcast."

"If her intentions were to, in any way -- because we all heard the click bait of it all -- but I didn't hear the rest of it. If the rest of it was, 'I totally loved Nick and we were in a great relationship but it seemed insane to get engaged that early,' then I'm totally fine with that!" Nick expressed.

Nick, however, said if Vanessa was trying to imply "she was stuck in a relationship she didn't want to be in," then that would be a totally different story.

"Then I have a problem with that because that would feel untrue," Nick reasoned. "But you never really know by the headlines. I guess I try not to jump to conclusions.... It's tough."

When Vanessa spoke to Taylor on her podcast late last month, she said, "I didn't want to get engaged. They didn't air this. I had a conversation with [Nick], and I said, 'Listen, wouldn't it be better if we just date outside of the show and then get engaged? Because that'd be more meaningful. We'd get to know each other.'"

Vanessa alleged Nick, however, pushed for an engagement for a couple of different reasons.

"He brought up something really important, and I think if we weren't engaged, we would've broken up sooner," Vanessa, who's originally from Canada, explained.

"He said, 'I know to you it could be just a piece of jewelry, but there's so much meaning towards us leaving engaged because there's going to be so much attention. There's going to be so much, like, backlash on us after and once we're done with the show. At least... this is going to hold us together more.'"

And Vanessa apparently agreed, saying she and Nick ultimately committed to staying together and working towards the same goal.

"I wouldn't have said yes if I didn't picture him as someone that I could've potentially grown with," Vanessa shared.

Nick and Vanessa broke up in August 2017, less than six months after their The Bachelor engagement aired on ABC.

However, Vanessa insisted on Taylor's podcast she was definitely "ready for marriage" and to start a family when she appeared on The Bachelor at age 28.

"I was ready to uproot my life, and I did," explained Vanessa, who moved to the United States for Nick after the show.

"And so, to me, it all made sense, because I'm like, 'Wow, I went through all these breakups that literally were so hard on me to for me to be on the show, and so maybe it was meant for me to be on the show and it was meant for me to date Nick and it was meant for me to have this life.'"

Vanessa has since moved on with businessman Josh Wolfe, the Director of Outreach and Programming for Quebec and Atlantic Canada for the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs.
