Married at First Sight star Derek Sherman admits Katie Conrad talking about having children soon due to her diabetes made him nervous.

Derek, a 26-year-old cyber security engineer from Maryland, was matched to marry Katie, a 25-year-old mental health professional from Virginia, by Married at First Sight experts Pastor Calvin Roberson, Dr. Pepper Schwartz and Dr. Viviana Coles for Season 10 of the Lifetime reality series, which premiered earlier this month.

In Married at First Sight's premiere, Katie revealed to the cameras, "I have been a Type 1 diabetic since I was 10 or 11 [years old]. It's a bigger risk for me to get pregnant as I get older, so I want to have kids sooner rather than later."

During a Wednesday appearance on Married at First Sight: Unfiltered, Derek watched the clip back of Katie injecting herself with insulin, and host Jamie Otis asked Derek how it felt to learn Katie doesn't want to wait to have children.

"Does hearing that right there make you nervous at all?" Jamie asked.

"Umm, yeah," Derek replied. "It definitely made me a little nervous."

"I definitely want kids. I would like a couple kids, but I'd like to wait a couple years before that. So, I guess it's just figuring out how soon is 'soon,'" Derek explained.

Derek first heard about Katie's diabetes on his wedding day when the strangers were standing at the altar together.

Before Katie and Derek exchanged vows, Katie's family and friends wanted Derek to know about his wife's chronic condition as well as the fact she never gives up, is honest and loves dogs.

"I think the thing that stood out the most was the diabetes," Derek admitted on Unfiltered.

"Because I know a little bit about it, and so it was something where I was like, 'Okay, this is something I need to figure out. I need to learn about this stuff.'"

Derek added, "Because my first job as a husband is making sure that I can keep my wife alive. So I wanted to feel that out."

Derek and Katie's wedding was featured in the second episode of Married at First Sight's tenth season.

When asked how it felt to finally meet his wife, Derek gushed, "As soon as she walked down the aisle, I just had this moment that's like, 'Alright, I can do this. I can.'"

"It was just that instant relief," Derek elaborated.

"Because I was the most nervous and scared when I was sitting at the altar, like, 'Okay, who's going to come around that corner?!'"

Jamie joked Derek was probably trying to get an idea of Katie looked like by checking out her family members all sitting on one side of the aisle.

"I was trying to do mental math and everything. [I'm looking through her guests], like, 'Hmm, I don't know!'" Derek said with a laugh.

One of Derek's Married at First Sight co-stars, Taylor Dunklin, also appeared on the Unfiltered broadcast and offered her first impression of Derek and Katie as a couple after watching them get married in a Season 10 clip.

"Oh my gosh, so sweet. So sweet. First, Derek, your smile when you saw Katie -- you could light up a room. I could tell you were truly happy. That was just really sweet to watch," said Taylor, who married Brandon Reid on the show this season.

"I never would have known you guys were strangers, watching that."

And Derek agreed Katie didn't really feel like a stranger to him when they said, "I do."

"That was actually one of the interesting things for me, is, like, there was that kind of instant connection, where it was like, 'We are strangers, but I'm okay with looking in your eyes,'" Derek shared.

In addition to Derek and Katie and Taylor and Brandon, Married at First Sight's tenth season also stars Mindy Shiben and Zach Justice, Meka Jones and Michael Watson, and Jessica Studer and Austin Hurd.

Married at First Sight currently airs on Wednesday nights at 8PM ET/PT on Lifetime.
