Grammy-winning singer Lou Rawls is in a Los Angeles hospital with lung and brain cancer, it was reported Friday.

Rawls' wife, Nina, made the revelation during a marriage annulment hearing Thursday in Maricopa (Ariz.) County Superior Court, the Arizona Republic reported.

His attorney told Judge Michael Wilkinson the Chicago native and resident of Scottsdale, Ariz., could not attend the hearing because he was in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. No ruling was made Thursday on the annulment.

Rawls quit smoking 35 years ago and told the Republic via phone Thursday night he has been receiving alternative and traditional treatment.

"Don't count me out, brother," he said. "There's been many people who have been diagnosed with this kind of thing, and they're still jumpin' and pumpin'."

Rawls filed the annulment papers against his wife of two years, claiming Nina, 35, "absconded with" thousands of dollars, court papers said. She has denied the claim, saying she transferred $350,000 to an account of her own to protect her husband from one of his adult daughters.

The couple have an 11-month-old son.
