Keira Knightley is reportedly in negotiations for the lead role of a Catherine the Great biopic helmed by Barbra Streisand.

The British actress is in talks to work off the script written by Kristina Lauren Anderson which was among the best unproduced screenplays in 2014.

The Russian monarch on whom the upcoming film is based was born Sophia Augusta Fredericka and ultimately became the longest-ruling female leader of the country.

She ruled between 1762 and 1796.

The film will reportedly follow how the young Catherine navigated an abusive marriage to the Russian heir and eventually came to power.

"Life of Pi" producer Gil Nettter will produce the biopic.
