Julia Roberts has signed on to star as the Queen in a new retelling of the Snow White fairy tale set to start shooting in April, The Hollywood Reporter said.

"The Brothers Grimm: Snow White" is to be helmed by "The Cell" director Tarsem Singh. It is scheduled for a June 29, 2012 theatrical release.

It is expected to be a darker, more modern take on the classic children's story, with the heroine joining forces with seven dwarfs and seeking revenge against her evil stepmother for killing her father, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said Tuesday.

Roberts' film credits include "Eat Pray Love," "Erin Brockovich," "Ocean's 11," "Runaway Bride," "My Best Friend's Wedding" and "Pretty Women."
