Rockstar made the announcement on X Thursday. Grand Theft Auto VI was originally slated for release in 2025 before it was delayed the first time to May 26, 2026.

"We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve," Rockstar said.

"We want to thank you again for your patience and support. While the wait is a little longer, we are incredibly excited for players to experience the sprawling state of Leonida and return to modern day Vice City," the company continued.

Grand Theft Auto VI will follow couple Lucia and Jason as they embark on a life of crime together in the South Florida-inspired Vice City. The game is slated for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The most recent Grand Theft Auto game, Grand Theft Auto V, was released in 2013. The fifth entry has sold over 200 million copies and received multiple updates over the years through its Grand Theft Auto Online mode. Grand Theft Auto V has also been ported to newer consoles such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The series last visited Vice City in the 1980s-themed classic Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, which was released in 2002.
