A man in England sparked a number of police calls after drivers confused a gnome that he was carrying along a local roadway for a child.

The man was spotted walking down M60 carrying the garden decoration and was eventually arrested according to a series of Tweets by North West motorways police.

"Earlier today we had a lady taking her dog for a walk on the M60 now we have a man carrying a gnome," they wrote on Tuesday night after receiving several calls.

About a half an hour later police confronted the man and said he had been arrested.

"The man with the gnome on the M60 has been arrested due to his behaviour when challenged by an officer," they wrote.

The gnome was eventually confiscated by Greater Manchester traffic police who shared a photo of the decoration.
