Emily Maynard and fiance Jef Holm were reportedly close to breaking up even before their alleged cheating fight.

Prior to The Bachelorette couple's alleged blowout argument in which Holm suspected Maynard had been cheating on him after discovering explicit text messages to and from another man in her cell phone, their relationship had already been rocky, Us Weekly reported in its September 10 issue.

"Even before [the fight] happened, they were close to breaking up," a source told Us.

Despite their alleged issues, Maynard and Holm are reportedly doing their best to cover everything up.

"They're keeping it together for business reasons," a source close to Holm told Us. "They're trying to fix appearances -- not the relationship."

Maynard and Holm were spotted late last month shopping together at the grocery store and exchanging flirty laughs and kisses after reports had circulated about the pair's alleged cheating scandal. However, an onlooker at the store insisted photographers asked the couple to kiss and they happily obliged several times in order to "deliver the money shot," Us reported.

"The things they are doing right now are to save face, because the whole world knows they are having problems," said another source.

A Holm insider added, "They're not getting along as well as they're trying to make it seem."

In fact, an insider told Us the alleged fight over Maynard's reported infidelity wasn't an isolated incident for the newly-engaged couple. Four days after Holm's proposal aired during The Bachelorette's eighth-season finale broadcast on July 22, they traveled to Ghana for charity work and both raved to the public about how the experience had united them even more.

However, one insider claimed the two "were distant on the trip," while another insider told Us that Maynard had shut herself in an air-conditioned room when cameras weren't snapping and "she would watch Bachelor Pad on her iPad. She was miserable."

Holm and Maynard also reportedly put on a good face while attending The Bachelor producers Cassie Lambert and Peter Scalettar's wedding on August 4.

"Emily was being flirty with other guys," a source told Us, further explaining that Holm quickly grew aggravated with his fiancee and rushed to leave the event at the end of the night.

"He stormed off to the car."

According to an additional source, Maynard even complains to friends about how "lame" her fiance is.

"Emily even said, 'Jef's not Mormon, he's bore-mon,'" the source told the magazine.
