The Pop Idol franchise contiunues to produce national hits for BMG Music Group. The latest success belongs to Ryan Malcolm, the winner of CTV's Canadian Idol, whose single "Something More" on BMG's Canadian-only ViK. label has now spent two weeks at #1 on the Nielsen SoundScan Canadian Single Sales charts.

"Something More," which Ryan first performed on Canadian Idol, barely charted in its first (partial) week, checking in at #53, but then rose straight to #1 and remained there for the week ended October 12. Nevertheless, at this point there does not appear to be any plan on the part of BMG to release the Ryan Malcolm single in the U.S.

We admit to a certain curiosity about BMG's decision to place Ryan's single on ViK. and to release it in Canada only, considering how many Canadian singers and musicians have succeeded in the U.S. (ranging from Celine Dion to Neil Young to Bryan Adams to Rush) over the years. Perhaps national hits are enough for BMG from Pop Idol --- although we note that even Simon Cowell is tired of Pop Idol winners who can't reach "Number 1 across the globe."
