The Liverpool, England, City Council wants "The Weakest Link" host Anne Robinson to apologize for suggesting its children are thieves.

Robinson, who hails from the city, made the comment during her BBC2 quiz show, Sky News said Wednesday.

Robinson asked Liverpool teacher Lisa Foster if she taught her pupils to steal.

When the teacher replied: "No", Robinson replied: "Well then, why are they so good at it?"

Both Foster and her school say they were not offended, but city council leader Mike Storey took exception to the exchange.

"She would no doubt say it was just a bit of fun, but these slurs on the city have a drip, drip, drip effect," Storey said.

A BBC spokesman said: "Anne's sharp tongue means no contestant is safe from the banter, including someone from her own town."

In 2001, Robinson described the Welsh as "irritating and annoying."
