Ashley Martson was a 31-year-old from Mechanicsburg, PA and Jay Smith was a 20-year-old from Port Maria, Jamaica when he arrived in America on a K-1 visa.

After originally appearing on Season 6 of 90 Day Fiance, Ashley and Jay also returned for Season 4 of 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After?.

Ashley and Jay's relationship began when they met at a bar while Ashley was vacationing in Jamaica for a friend's wedding.

Although they parted ways after a whirlwind romance in Jamaica, Ashley revealed Jay -- whom she calls "the life of the party" and the "light" in her life -- contacted her on social media once she returned to the United States and they began talking frequently and getting to know each other better.

Six months later, Ashley returned to Jamaica to visit her man, and then Jay proposed marriage after only eight days together.

Jay eventually received a K-1 visa, and 90 Day Fiance's sixth season has showed Jay getting settled in Ashley's home and the couple getting married in Las Vegas after they allegedly received online insults and threats from people who didn't approve of their interracial romance.

According to a wedding registry that was subsequently deleted, Jay and Ashley were originally planning to the knot on May 26 in Ashley's hometown of Mechanicsburg, PA.

However, just before Christmas 2018, speculation that Ashley and Jay may have suddenly split began swirling online after Ashley made a cryptic Instagram Stories posting about not being about to "fake" things anymore and 90 Day Fiance fans noticed she had also deleted all of her photos of Jay from her Instagram account.

"You can only fake that things everything is ok for so long. Then you just hit that point... - ME!!!!!" the Instagram Stories posting stated.

In addition, fans also noticed Ashley and Jay no longer appeared to be following each other on Instagram.

Then on December 30, Jay shared a GoFundMe campaign to help him "get a place to stay" -- seemingly confirming the couple's split.

Prior to the December 22 posting, Ashley and Jay's social media postings had regularly featured each other and made it clear that they were still together and living in Mechanicsburg.

After a few more weeks of split rumors and gossip, Ashley filed for divorce in January 2019 in a Pennsylvania court.  However, she withdrew the divorce paperwork eleven days later, confusing fans further about the real status of their relationship.

Then, in early February, Ashley claimed she and Jay had never separated after getting married and the couple had staged and leaked a lot of the alleged problems and issues in their relationship.

However, in April 2019, Ashley suddenly made social-media postings in which she threatened to file for divorce from Jay and suggested they had split.

Ashley subsequently filed for divorce a second time on April 23.  The filing alleged that Jay -- whose formal name is Conroy and is referred to as such in the divorce filing -- committed adultery during the course of their 11-month marriage.

Rumors circulated on social media claiming Jay cheated on Ashley and got another girl pregnant; however, Jay denied them.

On July 3, Jay was arrested for violating a protection order Ashley had filed with her local police two days earlier.

However, while Jay was quickly released by local authorities after a court hearing on the PFA violation charge, Jay was then handed over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency as there was also an active warrant for his arrest for allegedly being in America illegally.

Jay remained in ICE custody until July 31, when he was released after his boss posted $4,500 bail.

In an interview, Ashley said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had been looking for Jay since June 28 because he had been living in America illegally since she withdrew his adjustment of status paperwork earlier in 2019.

After Jay's detainment by ICE, Jay's sister Poochie went on Instagram and made several shocking public accusations against Ashley -- including claims that Ashley is the paid mistress of a rich old sugar daddy and that Ashley's affair is what caused Jay to cheat on Ashley other women.

Immediately upon his release from ICE custody in July 2019, Jay was greeted by his new girlfriend Kayla O'Brien, who had previously claimed Jay was a just a "close friend."

According to Ashley, Jay and Kayla began dating in January 2019. However, in September 2019, Kayla confirmed she and Jay had split after Jay was spotted with Ashley again.

But by October 2019, Ashley and Jay had reportedly split up again after new cheating allegations had emerged.

Ashley announced the couple had "officially divorced" in November 2019, only to retract the claim two months later, claiming Jay had dated his paperwork incorrectly.

By March 2020, Ashley and Jay were back together again.

"They are back together and they are trying to make it work out," an insider told E! News.

"[Ashley] wasn't happy without [Jay]. She is trying to make it work, and he is manning up about his behavior more."

In August 2020, Ashley celebrated the third anniversary of her wedding to Jay online.

"It's been a wild 3 years but here we are celebrating! I love you so much! Happy anniversary," she wrote in an August 8 Instagram posting containing a gallery of wedding photos.

However, a month later Ashley took to Instagram and announced she and Jay had parted ways "for good."

"Sometimes things just don't work out, and it's not anyone's fault. It's just the way things are," Ashley wrote in a September 2020 posting on Instagram.

Ashley then wrote to her followers in the since-deleted post, "Before the stories get all misconstrued, I will just address it myself. Jay and I have made the decision to separate for good.

"I thought I was stronger and more forgiving but I'm not. Sometimes when trust is broken, it just cannot be repaired."
