America's Next Top Model 5 - Episode 5 Summary

'The 'Flaws' Episode' By Isabelle Murray
Original Airdate: October 12, 2005

The start of the episode is very classical:  Oh my God!  I was up for elimination!  I have to up my game!  or Oh my God!  A girl was eliminated!  That really means that anyone can be eliminated at any moment!  (Well, duh!)

Anyway, let’s forget about elimination!  Someone took a camera and started taking pictures.  The aptly nicknamed super-corrupted-girl (Jayla) instigates some topless poses.  Whee!  Sorry, guys:  we don’t see anything… they blurred it out.

Next, what would be a reality tv show without some bitching?  Well, super-clueless-girl (Lisa; boy, did I choose her nickname right!) wants to meet with some girls to tell them what they need to be working on.  So, when she talks to super-toned-girl (formerly known as super-eyebrows-girl (they fixed the eyebrows so it doesn’t work anymore); Coryn), it doesn’t go all too well.  Super-clueless-girl tells super-toned-girl to stop exercising because she is too skinny and too toned and she should eat and stuff.  Super-toned-girl replies that she would be very foolish to follow the advice of one of her competitor.  And then she proceeds to say that the judges have never said that she was too buff.  And, obviously, we see some footage of super-photographer-dude (Nigel Barker) saying that he thought that she was too hard, and maybe a bit too toned.

Next, the girls go to Smashbox, which is the home of LA fashion week.  Super-makeup-dude (Jay Manuel) is there to welcome the girls.  He tells them that they are super lucky to have someone like Twiggy on their panel of judges this year because she has been through a lot in her time.  So, in walks Twiggy.  She explains to the girls that she was the exact opposite of what was fashionable at the time:  voluptuous girls.  She was skinny, she was awkward, and she says that, if she would have gone to a modeling agency, she would have been turned down in a heartbeat because she was not what was in vogue at the time.  So, Vidal Sassoon asked her to cut her hair and a photographer took beautiful pictures of her and, little did she know, but she was the new style.

Then, the girls get to ask her questions.  Super-cheese-girl (Bre) says that she sooooooo wants to become famous.  Twiggy tells her that it is good to have high aspirations but that, in doing so, unfortunately, oftentimes, you forget what you are doing in the moment.  So, she should focus her energies more on whatever is going on right now.  Super-sexy-plus-size-girl (Diane) asks how to be sexy yet not porn star-ish.  Twiggy reassures her that the camera sees within the soul so she has nothing to worry about and stuff.

Twiggy leaves and in walk two men:  Davis and Dean Factor, founders of Smashbox.  Each girl gets a sheet of paper and she has to write what her own negatives are as well as those of all other girls.  Some girls say that they are worried over what super-clueless-girl (Lisa) will be writing about them.  The following flaws were identified:

• Super-corrupted-girl (Jayla) has big ears.

• Super-cheese-girl (Bre) has forward teeth and her forehead is of worry.

• Super-kitty-girl (Nicole) is deemed to be very pale.  Super-makeup-dude tells her to be extra careful with her skin and put lots of sunscreen because she wouldn’t want to have a big sunburn right before a contract.  Super-kitty-girl reassures him that she already does that.

• Super-sexy-plus-size-girl (Diane) fades away in front of the camera.

• Super-frizzy-girl (Nik) has somewhat bulgy eyes.

• Super-Twiggy-like-girl (Kim) is said to have love handles and a soft butt.  So, super-makeup-dude (Jay Manuel) asks who wrote that.  Super-clueless-girl (Lisa) has no problem admitting that she did.  Super-makeup-dude says that he can’t say for sure about the butt since he has not felt it and asks super-Twiggy-like-girl to come over and he touches her butt and declares that it’s fine.

• Super-clueless-girl (Lisa) is said to become cross-eyed from a distance.

• Super-Dairy-Queen-girl’s (Kyle) neck is too short.

• Super-toned-girl (Coryn) is said to be too skinny and too muscular (guess who wrote that).

When super-makeup-dude (Jay Manuel) told the girls their flaws or not-so-great-features, he also told them how they can correct it in front of the camera.

They have Tyra mail that talks about accentuating the negative.  So, the next step in their challenge is to have pictures taken where one set of pictures is where they flaunt the flaw and the other set is where they hide the flaw.  While they are waiting for their photo shoot, a little altercation erupts between super-clueless-girl (Lisa) and super-toned-girl (Coryn) yet again.  The latter tells the former that she doesn’t like her.  Okay, fine.  Super-clueless-girl remains clueless, although she does notice that something is going on but she says that she can’t do anything about it.  For the photo shoot, interestingly, the girls can pretty much decide or at least give instructions to the photographer on how they want to go about for each shot.

After all the pictures are taken, super-runway-dude (J. Alexander) shows each girl’s shots and explains what could have been done better.  Well, this was a challenge so one winner is picked:  super-Dairy-Queen-girl (Kyle) who gets to choose 2 friends to go to a spa.  She chooses super-Twiggy-like-girl (Kim; who is very popular when it comes to being picked as a friend… good for her) and super-toned-girl (Coryn).  When we see the footage of them at the spa, they are having a massage where they are showered while being massaged so it looks like rain… Anyway, it looked way fabulous and made me suddenly wish I could go to a spa.

Back at the house, they had some cryptic Tyra mail that instructed them to be ready at 6:30 am.  They are met by super-makeup-dude (Jay Manuel) who explains that some people go to extremes to hide their flaws… they use plastic surgery.  Some girls are very nervous.  They think that they will have plastic surgery or something.  I don’t think so, honeys.  It would take too long for you guys to recover from the procedures, come on!  So, super-makeup-dude says that the person who will be doing the photo shoot has had plastic surgery and she used to be a model and she is now also a photograph and here she is:  Janice Dickinson.  Some girls are intimidated while others are thrilled.  Each girl will have some makeup and props to make them look like they had a certain procedure done.
