Matt Kennedy Gould was the victim of a television hoax by The Joe Schmo Show in 2003. Matt was the only character on the Schmo television program who was not an actor. Matt has been described as the "nicest, most down-to-earth reality show contestant ever."
Background
Gould was playing basketball at a Jewish Community Center in the South Hills section of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania when a casting director spotted him. He was asked to go through an audition process and was selected for the show.
Matt, a native of the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1999, where he majored in speech communications. Later Matt went to law school at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, but dropped out. He has since expressed ambitions to get involved in entertainment.
Gould's plaintive cry, "What is going on?," has became a popular catch phrase and was played at the end of various Spike TV programs for the next year.
Matt's winnings: He won a spa vacation, a trip to Tahiti, a flat-screen TV and $100,000. He has since appeared in 10 Things Every Guy Should Experience and Joe Schmo 2. Gould says he had no regrets about signing onto the show.
Gould subsequently participated as a referee on the Spike TV series 10 Things Every Guy Should Experience (2004). He was a contestant on Battle of the Network Reality Stars (2005).
