The Amazing Race 13 (Courtesy Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
The Amazing Race 13 is the 13th installment of the reality television competition series The Amazing Race. It featured 11 teams of two, each with a preexisting relationship, in a race around the world.
The 13th season was part of the fall line-up for 2008-09 season and premiered Sunday nights at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT starting on September 28, 2008 and the season finale aired on December 7, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.
Siblings Nick and Emily "Starr" Spangler were the winners of this race. Excluding the Family Edition, Starr remains the youngest person ever to win the Amazing Race, at age 21 during the race. Nick and Starr are also the first team of siblings to win the competition.
Development and filming
The Amazing Race 13 lasted for 23 days and traveled over miles. The teams raced in eight countries, including Boliva, Cambodia and Kazakhstan for the first time, as well as Brazil, New Zealand, India, and Russia, with the finish line in Portland, Oregon. CBS had originally planned to only air one installment of The Amazing Race (Season 12) in the 2007-08 season, but due to the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike, CBS ordered a 13th installment as a replacement for programs affected by the strike. CBS greenlit the 13th installment on December 9, 2007. Race locations were scouted in January 2008 and filming took place between April and May 2008.
This is only the second Race to circumnavigate the world westward (The Amazing Race 10 was the first, and followed by later seasons).
This was the first Race in which an eliminated team was absent from the Finish Line to cheer on the final 3 teams, as Dallas (of Toni & Dallas) had misplaced his passport and the team's money in Russia on the penultimate leg. This had been hinted at in promotional materials aired before the Race began, where CBS revealed that one team made "an unprecedented mistake that ultimately prohibit[ed] them from joining their fellow Racers at the finish line." In a post-Race interview, Dallas revealed that the loss of the passport and money was partly caused by the changing of a microphone battery by production. The passport was eventually turned in to the U.S. Embassy in Russia, but it was still too late for him and his mother to join their fellow racers at the finish line. Starr revealed in a post-race interview that Toni and Dallas joined the other racers in Portland, Oregon at a party the night following the end of the race. This incident also happened separately on Season 15 (surprise elimination on leg 1 where one team was eliminated at the starting line and opted to quit the show instead, and passport mishaps on leg 4 where the 1st place team realized that one of their passports was missing and was eliminated before they could find it).
Post-race interviews revealed that Starr and Dallas " who competed on opposing teams " have been long-distance dating for six months since the show completed taping.
Andrew & Dan stated in a post-race interview that the second U-Turn was available on Leg 9 but it was not used by any teams, thus it was not aired in the show.
This was also the first season in the show's history not to use a U-Turn after its first incarnation since Season 12.
Applications for The Amazing Race 13 were due on November 27, 2007. Semi-finalist interviews were held in December 2007 and January 2008 and final casting interviews took place in February 2008, in Los Angeles, California.
The cast featured a pair of fraternity brothers, a team of married hippies, southern belles, businesswomen divorcees and a retired NFL player hoping to reconnect with his estranged wife while on the Race.
The show also featured John Keoghan, host Phil Keoghan's father, as the local greeter at Te Puke in Keoghan's native New Zealand.
Winner Nick Spangler recently opened on Broadway in the new musical The Book of Mormon.
CBS heavily promoted the new season, including placing advertising on the top of three hangar buildings at Los Angeles International Airport prior to the premiere. Unlike other seasons, CBS provided a location map to viewers of where the Race would be traveling prior to the start of the season.

A team placement indicates that the team was eliminated.
An team's placement indicates that the team came in last on a non-elimination leg and had to perform a Speed Bump task in the following leg.
A means the team chose to use a U-Turn; indicates the team who received it; around a leg number indicates a leg where the U-Turn was available but not used.
^ Kelly & Christy were not shown in the broadcast when they arrived at the clue box, which was at Pelourinho, but we did see them complete the Soft Way Down Detour while they were currently in 5th place.
^ Mark & Bill initially arrived 8th, but were issued a 30-minute penalty for taking a taxi instead of going on foot to Bumpy Ride the Detour. During this time, Kelly & Christy " the only team trailing them at that point " were able to check in and Mark & Bill were eliminated before the 30 minutes elapsed.
^ Nick & Starr initially arrived 5th at the Pit Stop, but were issued a 30-minute penalty for speeding. This did not affect their placement and was not in the broadcast.
^ Terence & Sarah initially arrived 3rd, but were issued a 30-minute penalty for speeding and was issued at the start of the next leg. They thus departed 5th in the next leg.
^ Andrew & Dan initially arrived 4th, but took a taxi to the Pit Stop instead of going on foot as stated on the clue. Instead of waiting out a 30-minute penalty, Phil told them to go back to the end of the Detour and walk back to the Pit Stop. This did not affect their placement.
^ Ken & Tina initially arrived 3rd but had missed the clue directing them to the Pit Stop, having arrived there by chance while searching for the clue. They were required to retrieve the missed clue at the end of the Detour and return to the Pit Stop. This did not affect their placement.
^ Toni & Dallas were initially denied their clue at the Detour starting point for taking the Metro instead of a taxi and the lady with a Shetland Pony required them to go back to the end of the Roadblock and return to the Detour starting point via taxi. Later, when all the other teams had checked in at the Pit Stop, Phil came to the Rizhskaya Station and eliminated them while they were still performing the Ride the Lines Detour.

The first five teams eliminated were sequestered at a villa in Acapulco, Mexico to await the finale. Subsequent eliminated teams telephoned the villa to inform the teams at the villa of their elimination, but continued to run the race as decoys to throw off spoilers to the final outcome of the race. The sequestered teams met up with the decoy teams in the final destination city to cheer on the final three teams as they crossed the Finish Line, with the exception of Toni & Dallas, who were still stuck in Russia after their elimination due to the loss of Dallas' passport.
CBS posted short videos on its website after each episode aired in the Pacific Time Zone to show the eliminated teams interacting at the villa.
After Leg 1, Anita & Arthur were the first team eliminated and sent to the villa first. They expressed their disappointment for being eliminated so early but were also appreciative of their surroundings and grateful that they could live in the lap of luxury in the villa.
After Leg 2, Anthony & Stephanie were the second team eliminated and sent to the villa. Anita & Arthur were surprised but excited that it was them and Anthony & Stephanie felt welcomed by Anita & Arthur and felt less depressed over their own elimination. Over a meal, they predicted that Terence & Sarah will win the race. The two teams then went out of the villa and enjoyed the sights and sounds of Acapulco.
After Leg 3, Mark & Bill were the third team eliminated and sent to the villa. They were glad that the two teams there were shocked and saddened to hear that they were eliminated. As they retold their story on how they were eliminated, they found Mexican wrestling masks in their room in the villa. The 3 teams were later brought, at night, to a luchadore exhibition where Anthony & Stephanie had a lack of interest and left earlier to roam the streets instead.
After Leg 4, Marisa & Brooke were the fourth team eliminated and sent to the villa. They were excited on how lavish the villa was. They then discussed what happened in New Zealand before all 4 teams went into town and Anthony, Stephanie and Bill did a bungee jump as the others watched on.
After Leg 5, Aja & Ty were the fifth team eliminated and sent to the villa. But before they arrived, the first 4 eliminated teams went to the market and then prepared their own lunch to celebrate the arrival of the fifth team. The teams were surprised that it was Aja & Ty, who filled them in on what has happened in the race. After the meal, Anthony did not offer to help clean up, leaving Stephanie embarrassed. Meanwhile, Ty feels awkward to not be on the race and predicts that Andrew & Dan will be the next team eliminated or maybe wrong .
Leg 6 was a non-elimination leg. The five eliminated teams went to the beach where they encountered a weird individual who staged a "performance" for the teams in the ocean. There were mixed reactions from the teams with Anita being thrilled and filled with admiration while Ty was having difficulty understanding the different lifestyle of the people in Mexico.
After Leg 7, Kelly & Christy were the sixth team eliminated. They called in during the wee hours of Acapulco where the first five eliminated teams awaited their call. They recalled their horrifying "Holi Festival" Roadblock experience and gave them an update on what had happened on the race.
After Leg 8, Terence & Sarah were the seventh team eliminated. Before the phone call, the eliminated teams went to "La Quebrada" to see cliffdivers jumping down to the sea. After that, they gave opinions on who will be eliminated next. Most of them thought it was Andrew & Dan. They were all shocked when Terence & Sarah called in as several teams were rooting for them.
Leg 9 was a non-elimination leg. While Aja & Ty have a minor tiff with each other, Marisa & Brooke struggle to make toast. Anthony starts complaining about how slow time is passing in the Villa. All in all, most of the sequestered teams reveal that they are missing home and are eager to return to their normal lives. Most of them wanted to see either Toni & Dallas or Ken & Tina win the race.
After Leg 10, Toni & Dallas were the eighth and final team to be eliminated. The first five eliminated teams packed up to head for the Finish Line location. As they packed to leave the villa, each team recalled their experience with each other at the villa and expressed their excitement for returning home soon.
Leg 11 was the final leg of The Amazing Race 13. The five sequestered teams arrived in Portland, Oregon, where they checked in to a hotel and were reunited with Terence and Sarah. Toni & Dallas then called the six teams at the hotel, breaking the news that they had been eliminated and would most likely not be joining them at the Finish Line due to their passport mishap. The teams then went to the Finish Line site, where they reunited with Kelly & Christy, and some of the teams again expressed who they wanted to win. Nick & Starr express their joy and disbelief at winning the Race, while Ken & Tina express their disappointment but vow to make their marriage work. Andrew & Dan express their elation at making it to third place.

Teams took a zipline from the Bridge of the Gods to a nearby island below. At the island, teams then did a memory challenge involving the previous ten legs. Teams were faced with a board with spaces numbered 1-10, each corresponding to a leg of the race. They were required to remove the covers from the spaces one at a time, in numerical order, to reveal the symbol of a Roadblock, Detour, Route Info, or Pit Stop, then search through a field of 150 identical clue boxes " each of which contained a picture depicting a task or location from the Race " for a picture depicting that specific task or location from that leg (for example, Leg 1 revealed the Route Info symbol, so teams had to look for a picture depicting the coffee cart at o Rei do Pernil). They were then required to insert the picture into the space on the board, where a green light on top of the space indicated that the picture was the correct one, and absence of a green light indicated they had to try again. Once all 10 spaces were correctly filled in, teams were allowed to retrieve the next clue from the parking lot.
At the Portland Building, teams were required to search for a green dinosaur statue located in the Standard Building, adjacent to the Portland building, where the next clue box was located.
