The Amazing Race 10

The Amazing Race 10 (Courtesy Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

The Amazing Race 10 was the tenth installment of the popular reality television show, The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race 10 features twelve teams of two with a pre-existing relationship in a race around the world. Applications were accepted through January 20, 2006 (one week later than the original deadline). Semi-finalist interviews occurred in late February/early March, followed by finalist interviews in Los Angeles during late March and early April. Filming ran from May 27, 2006 to June 24, 2006. This installment ran from September 17, 2006 to December 10, 2006.

Two new rules were made for this installment of the race.

  • The Intersection was introduced, a task where two teams were required to work together until otherwise instructed. If no other team was available when one team read the Intersection clue, they were required to wait for another team to show up before proceeding. The Intersection was also in conjunction with a Fast Forward, with the first team pairing to win to earn the Fast Forward for both teams.
  • Instead of the previous money and baggage penalties for coming in last place, the last place team in a non-elimination leg became Marked for Elimination meaning that unless they place first in the following leg, they receive a 30 minute penalty at the mat, possibly allowing teams finishing behind them to overtake them in the final placings for that leg.
  • In this season, every leg had a Roadblock (the double-length leg had two) so an individual could do up to 7 Roadblocks.

Note 1: Leg 1 was a double-elimination leg. Bilal & Sa'eed were eliminated first halfway through the leg (see below note), while Vipul & Arti were eliminated at the Pit Stop.
Note 2: Bilal & Sa'eed were the last team to arrive at the Meridian Gate in the Forbidden City, where teams got start times for the next morning. There were only 11 teams; they were eliminated in the middle of the leg.
Note 3: Kellie took, but failed to complete, the Roadblock in Leg 2. Already in last, Kellie & Jamie then checked into the Pit Stop and were eliminated.
Note 4: Tom & Terry arrived 2nd, but were assessed a 30 minute time penalty for traveling on motorbikes, which were prohibited to the racers for safety reasons.
Note 5: The Roadblock count does not include the results of any unaired Roadblocks.
Note 6: Due to an Intersection, two teams worked together to complete the Fast Forward and both were able to skip all remaining tasks and head to the Pit Stop.
Note 7: David & Mary arrived 5th, but were assessed a 30 minute penalty as they were "marked for elimination" and did not arrive at the Pit Stop in 1st. They were not, however, assessed the whole penalty as Lyn & Karlyn checked in 10 minutes after the penalty started.
Note 8: Leg 9 was double-length, with two detours and two roadblocks, shown over two episodes.

  • Red means the team was eliminated.
  • Purple means the team was the last to arrive at a pit stop in a non-elimination leg of the race and was thus "marked for elimination," meaning that if that team did not place first on the next leg, they would receive a 30 minute penalty. Contrary to prior seasons, they were neither stripped of their possessions nor money and they were able to receive money on the next leg.
  • Green means the team won the Fast Forward clue.
  • Matching colors of + symbols indicate teams who worked together during part of the leg as a result of the Intersection clue.
  • A yellow > means that team chose to use the Yield; < indicates the team who received it;<> indicates a leg where the Yield was available but not used.

Notable race events

General

  • This is the first season to (nearly) circumnavigate the globe in a generally westwardly fashion, crossing the Pacific Ocean in the first leg and crossing the Atlantic on the final leg. Most other seasons (with the exception of Season 7 and Season 8) tranversed the globe in a generally eastwardly direction; the first legs of these races had teams crossing the Atlantic Ocean or staying on the North America/South America landmass, and then crossing the Pacific on the final legs.
  • Sarah reported in a post-race interview on The Finish Line that because of the Roadblock in the first leg a single team member could do a maximum of 7 Roadblocks instead of the usual 6 (as has been in place from Season 6). This rule was never mentioned on the show, although Karlyn performed 7 aired Roadblocks.
  • A Fast Forward was offered in conjunction with the Intersection in Leg 8. Mary reported in a post-race interview on The Finish Line that a team could use a Fast Forward for a second time (in this case with a team that had not used a Fast Forward earlier in the race). In previous seasons, teams were allowed to use only one Fast Forward during the entire race. Her reports were proven to be true in The Amazing Race 11, where one team was able to use both the Fast Forward while being intersected with another team and another individual Fast Forward on the race.

Pre-Race

In-Race

  • In Leg 3 and Leg 4 (Vietnam), all route markers were white and yellow instead of red and yellow. This was done because the flag of the vanquished South Vietnam also consisted of red and yellow stripes. This is similar to Season 3's Leg 11 in which the teams traveled through Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, however, the route markers were made solid yellow in that season. Additionally, teams were not allowed to ride on motorbikes for safety reasons. At the beginning of Leg 3, teams were not given any money and were not permitted either to beg for money or to sell items. Instead, they had to earn money in the Roadblock. At the beginning of Leg 4, teams received 588,000? (dong VND - approximately USD $37) at the start of the leg. This was the first time in race history the cash distribution was made in a currency in other than US dollars.
  • A Yield was available in one of the Vietnam legs, either Leg 3 or Leg 4, but was not used or aired, according to Mary on The Finish Line. David & Mary were apparently the first team on the Yield mat, so it is speculated that the Yield could have been before the Roadblock in Leg 4.
  • During Leg 6, Peter and Sarah's car had a handicap sticker from the state of California.
  • Peter and Sarah did not arrive at Leg 6's Pit Stop until after David and Mary departed at the beginning of Leg 7.
  • While no Roadblock was shown for Leg 7, a Roadblock clue is clearly visible in Dustin and Kandice's hands in one of the stills for the episode on the show's website.
  • The prize for Leg 10 was given to the team that selected the "good luck charm" earlier in the leg that happened to match the one worn by the greeter at the pit stop. Unlike most former luck prizes, however, this one was awarded to the winners of the leg.

Post-Race

  • David and Mary appeared on The View. David revealed that he had originally auditioned for Survivor. The couple also received gifts from the show, including vacations, a Ford Explorer, and a new house.
  • Just prior to returning to New York City for the post-race interview circuit, Lyn's house was ransacked.
  • David & Mary and Dustin & Kandice were selected to race in The Amazing Race All-Stars.
    • Notably, Dustin and Kandice did not make the usual interview tours after their elimination in this race for the first time, as they were still racing in All-Stars when the episode in which they were eliminated aired.
  • Dustin married her high school sweetheart prior to the start of All-Stars. In the pre-race interviews for All-Stars, Dustin states that Kandice was a bridesmaid at her wedding, which she might not have been had they not run the Season 10 Race together.
  • Dustin & Kandice received a letter from Lyn during All-Stars as part of a Roadblock task. A video of Karlyn yelling at Dustin & Kandice at an airport ticket counter during Season 10 was shown in the episode.
  • Peter Harsch (of Peter & Sarah) now works as a prosthetist at Navy Medical Center San Diego.
  • Episode 4 which contained Leg 4 was selected by CBS for The Amazing Race nomination in the 2007 Emmy Awards., , and subsequently garnered 5 total nominations, including one for the Outstanding Reality-Competition Program.

Unless otherwise noted, prizes were awarded to the first team to check in for each leg.

  • Leg 11 - A trip to Barbados, including swimming with turtles and a spa package from Travelocity.
  • Leg 12 - $1,000,000

Swamp This was cross country skiing through bog, and Swamp That was an obstacle course through bog. The Roadblock for this half of the leg was to search the mine for a marked dig site and get a piece of limestone. They then had to use tools to break it open to get their next clue, which was inside of it. As an additional task, each team member had to rappel face-first down from the top of the tower of the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.

In the final Roadblock of the race, one team member had to perform a tandem skydive onto Omaha Beach. The other team member remaining in the plane would be treated to a surprise nosedive. Once finished, the person who did the Roadblock was taken to a train station in a military jeep, while the other team member had to take a taxi. In the last Detour of the race, teams had to choose between Art and Fashion. In Art, they had to go to an art studio, pick up a painting, and then search at the nearby square for a painter who would give them their next clue. In Fashion, teams had to go to Anatomy Fashion Studio and make a jacket to fit on a mannequin using the tools provided. Once satisfied, a lady would give them their next clue.

When flying to Paris, Rob & Kimberly and Tyler & James chose to fly to Charles de Gaulle International Airport, while Lyn & Karlyn chose to fly to Orly Airport. When flying to New York, while the other two teams managed to take the earlier flight to John F.
