World of Dance Information

World of Dance is an American reality competition series, hosted by Jenna Dewan Tatum and executive produced by Jennifer Lopez. The series features dance performers, including solo acts and larger groups, representing any style of dance, competing for a grand prize of $1 million. The contestants are scored by judges Lopez, Ne-Yo, and Derek Hough. It premiered on NBC on May 30, 2017 as part of its summer programming.

Production

Jennifer Lopez, who executive produced the series and serves as a judge, felt that the series would be a return to her roots; Lopez had achieved early fame as a member of the Fly Girls"?the house dance crew of the Fox comedy series In Living Color. She explained that dance had been her "first form of artistic expression", and that the series "reminded me of all the reasons why I love dance and why I wanted to do this in the first place".

NBC originally announced that World of Dance would premiere on May 8, 2017 as a lead-out for The Voice. However, on March 31, 2017, NBC pushed the premiere back to May 30, 2017, becoming a lead-out for the season premiere of America's Got Talent instead. On June 29, 2017, NBC renewed the series for a second season.

Qualifiers

In each round of the Qualifiers, the dance acts will perform a 2-minute routine in front of the judges and a live audience. They will be scored by the judges in 5 categories: Performance, Technique, Choreography, Creativity & Presentation. Each category is worth 20 points with a perfect score of 100. For the dance act to progress forward, they must receive a combined total score of 80 or higher.

The Duels

In each round of The Duels, two acts in the same division compete for a spot in the next round. In each division, the acts with the top qualifying scores choose their opponents, then both acts perform back-to-back, receiving feedback from the judges. After each performance, the judges will score them in the 5 categories: Performance, Technique, Creativity, Choreography & Presentation. Unlike the Qualifiers, only the final combined total score for each act is shown. The act with the highest score at the end of the duel moves on to the next round, the other faces immediate elimination.
