Romans Information

Romans is a 2013 Malayalam comedy suspense thriller film directed by Boban Samuel and written by Y. V. Rajesh. The film is produced by Arun Ghosh and Bijoy Chandran, under the banner of Chand V Creations and features music composed by M. Jayachandran. Cinematography is done by Vinod Illampally, while Lijo Paul does the editing. The film features Kunchacko Boban, Biju Menon and Niveda Thomas in the lead roles, with Lalu Alex, T. G. Ravi, Vijayaraghavan, Nelson, Kochu Preman, Jaffer Idukki, Gayathri, Shanthakumari, Shaju, Jayan Cherthala, Geetha Salam, Kalabhavan Haneef, Shivaji Guruvayoor, Lishoy, Kakka Ravi, Ponnamma Babu and Arun Ghosh in supporting roles. The movie is inspired from the Hollywood movie We're No Angels.

The movie received a U certificate from the Censor Board of India. The film released on 17 January 2013, receiving positive response from audience and was declared a Block Buster.

Plot

Akash (Kunchacko Boban) and Shibu (Biju Menon) are two jail birds who escape from a train while they are being transported to a jail. They end up in a village at the Kerala " Tamil Nadu border, where they are mistaken for a pair of priests expected at the local church. The duo masquerade as priests, and reopen a church which has been closed for years, thereby winning over the villagers. A series of events that take place after their arrival bring about a change in their outlook towards life and society.

The plot is similar to the Hollywood movie We're No Angels. The movie has also taken inspiration from the Hollywood movie Pulp Fiction where Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) recites Ezekiel 25:17, before he executes someone.

Romans released on 17 January 2013 in 74 cinemas across Kerala, receiving positive response from audience.

Critical Reception

Romans received highly positive reviews from critics.

Sans Cinema gave the movie 3.5/4 stars, stating that "Watch these priests from Rome with your family. You will enjoy every moment in this fun ride."

Mallu Deals gave the movie 4/5 stars, saying that "Romans is a pleasing entertainer that will not make you regret. Just for the performance of Biju Menon itself, movie deserves a watch."

Sibin Sivanand of Theater Balcony gave the movie 74/100, concluding that "Romans is a good comedy entertainer with Kunchako Boban " Biju Menon once again bringing the best. There is no heavy weight story, yet this Romans will be a hilarious ride thanks to some good comedy filled narration."

Rasheed of Tikk View gave the movie 3.5/5 stars, commenting that "Romans is a total fun filled package. Don't miss it."

Smitha of One India gave the movie 3.5/5 stars, stating that "Romans is a comic caper and you will have plenty of reasons to laugh your heart out!"

IndiaGlitz gave the movie 6.5/10 stars, concluding that "Romans is targeted at the massive number of spectators who relish zany capers. If you are a member of this group, it's double the fun and guffaws this time; almost sure in leading to another commercial hit."

Cine Spot gave the movie 2.75/5 stars, saying that "Romans is an average movie, but is entertaining and perfect for an evening outing."

Kerala9 gave the movie 2.5/5 stars, commenting that "Boban Samuel is in full control of the direction part. It's just that he should have chosen a better script for his second movie. Anyhow, he has come up with a film that's OK for a one-time watch."

On the contrary, Paresh C Palicha of Rediff gave the movie 2/5 stars, saying that "Romans is just an average comic caper that does not make any sense if you want to take something back from the film."

Veeyen of Now Running gave the movie 2/5 stars, commenting that "The believability that had made Boban Samuel's debut film (Janapriyan) so endearing is seriously missing in his second cinematic outing."

Box Office

Romans collected in its first week and was declared as a Block Buster. Overall it had a gross of 12.52 crore with a satellite right of 3.10 crore and 30 lakhs as other rights

Satyam Audios released the Blu-ray,DVD & VCD of Romans on 20th May 2013 .
