Richard LeFrak Biography

Richard LeFrak (born in 1945 in New York, New York) is a prominent real estate developer in New York and New Jersey.

Early life and education

Richard LeFrak was born in 1945 to a Jewish family in New York City, one of four children of Ethel Stone and real estate developer Samuel J. LeFrak. LeFrak received a B.A. from Amherst College and a J.D. from Columbia University. In 1968, he joined his family real estate firm, the LeFrak Organization. In 2003, he became CEO after the death of his father.

Boardships and accolades

LeFrak sits on the Boards of Directors of BankUnited. He is a trustee of the Prostate Cancer Foundation. From 1995 to 2007, he was a Board member of Smith & Wollensky. He is also a former trustee of Amherst College, the American Museum of Natural History, the Trinity School, and a former New York State Banking Board member. He received an Honorary Doctorate degree from Amherst College in 1998.

Personal life

He is married to Karen Tucker, a children's author. They live in New York and Southampton. They have two sons:

  • James Tucker LeFrak (born 1974) - vice-chairman and managing director of the LeFrak Organization. In 2009, he married Susan Caroline Bierbaum in Las Vegas, Nevada in a Lutheran ceremony.
  • Harrison Tucker LeFrak (born 1976) - vice-chairman and managing director of the LeFrak Organization.
