Neal Shapiro Biography

Neal B. Shapiro (born March 9, 1958) is the president of PBS station Thirteen/WNET New York City, installed in February 2007. He is the chief executive of the station's license holder, the Educational Broadcasting Corporation (doing business as WNET.org), which also operates the Long Island, New York, PBS outlet WLIW.

Early life

Shapiro was born in a practicing Jewish family and raised in Delmar, New York. He attended Bethlehem Central High School graduating in 1976. He went on to graduate magna cum laude from Tufts University in 1980, with degrees in history and political science.

Career

He was with ABC News from 1980 until 1993 when he joined NBC News.

Shapiro is a former president of NBC News. Prior to this position he was an executive producer of Dateline NBC, guiding it from one night a week to five nights a week. He left NBC News in September 2005.

He taught at both Columbia University and his alma mater, Tufts University.

Awards

He has won Emmy Awards, DuPont-Columbia Awards, Sigma Delta Chi Awards and Chris Awards.

In 2005, he was inducted into the his high school's hall of fame.

In 2008, Shapiro received the P.T. Barnum Award from Tufts University for his exceptional work in the field of media and entertainment.

Family

In 1995, he married ABC News correspondent and Korean American, Juju Chang. Juju converted to Judaism. They have three sons: Jared (b. 2000), Travis (b. 2003), and Mason (b. 2007).
