Her

Her Information

Her is a 2013 science fiction romance film written, directed and produced by Spike Jonze. The film centers on a man who develops a relationship with a female voice produced by an intelligent computer operating system. It marks Jonze's solo screenwriting debut. The film premiered at the 2013 New York Film Festival and will be released theatrically in the United States on December 18, 2013.

Plot

Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) is a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet "Samantha" (Scarlett Johansson), a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other.

Cast

Carey Mulligan was originally cast, but she had to drop out due to scheduling difficulties. Her role eventually went to Rooney Mara.

Samantha Morton played the voice only role of Samantha during production of the film, but was replaced with Scarlett Johansson during post production.

Production

Principal photography on Her took place during the summer of 2012.

During production of the film, actress Samantha Morton performed the role of Samantha by acting on set "in a four-by-four carpeted soundproof booth made of black painted plywood and soft, noise-muffling fabric". At Jonze's suggestion, she and Joaquin Phoenix avoided seeing each other on set during production of the film.

Release

Her was chosen as the closing film of the 51st New York Film Festival, and had its world premiere on October 12, 2013. The film was set to have a limited release in North America on November 20, 2013 through Warner Bros. It has now been pushed back to a limited December 18, 2013 release with a January 10, 2014 wide release in order to accommodate an awards campaign.
