Evelyn Ellis Biography

Evelyn Ellis (February 2, 1894 - June 5, 1958) was an American character actress of stage and film. She was of African American descent. Devoting herself to the theatre her film roles were few but she appeared in films like The Joe Louis Story and Lady from Shanghai. An attractive woman who could have been a leading lady, she chose character roles.

Ellis made her theatrical debut at the Lafayette Theatre in Harlem in 1919. She debuted on Broadway in 1927 in a revival of Goat Alley. Appeared with Rose McClendon and Frank H. Wilson in Porgy. Later Broadway plays were Native Son, Deep are the Roots all-black version of Tobacco Road and revival in 1951 of The Royal Family. She appeared off Broadway in the course of her career. She made her last Broadway appearance in 1953.

She was born in Boston and died at Saranac Lake, New York June 5, 1958.
